Loving to learn English, studying hard, applying effective review methods, Le Do Thanh Tu achieved 8.5 IELTS points on the first test, in which listening and reading skills achieved a score of 9.0.

Thanh Tu (18 years old) took the IELTS test for the first time in February 2023. Tu achieved 8.5 IELTS, with a perfect score of 9.0 in reading and listening, 7.5 in writing, and 8.5 in speaking.

With a passion for English since childhood, after completing the secondary school program, Tu applied for and was admitted to the English specialized class at Gia Dinh High School, Binh Thanh District, Ho Chi Minh City. Currently, Tu is studying English at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City.

Tu has been learning English since he was in elementary school. However, he was really serious and started investing time in learning English since 8th grade. Tu said that the knowledge he acquired not only from his teachers at school but also from self-study at home through grammar and vocabulary books from Oxford and Cambridge.

“I prioritize learning vocabulary well because this is what helps me improve my foundation. Vocabulary is an important factor for me to be able to study more deeply and thoroughly,” Tu said.

Tu said that learning English is not something that can be learned in a day or two, but is a long journey of effort, constant exploration and appropriate learning methods. To achieve a high IELTS score, Thanh Tu always diligently studies vocabulary, thoroughly reviews knowledge, and practices test-taking skills by practicing questions in Cambridge books.

In class, Tu focused on the lectures to master the basic knowledge of English. Studying English helped Tu accumulate a lot of knowledge.

Tu said: “I have not attended any English test preparation classes at the center. To prepare for the IELTS test, I have to set goals and make a suitable study plan to achieve good results. I try to practice many test questions to improve my understanding of more issues and make it easier to handle situations in the test.”

For listening and reading, Tu believes that these are two skills that can be improved by practicing a lot. Tu often watches movies, reads books and newspapers, chats online with foreigners in English to improve vocabulary, grammar, communication skills, and learn about social knowledge. Thanks to that, Tu knows some English vocabulary and writing styles that are not found in books.

Tu shared: “To write well, I have to read regularly. Reading different topics helps me to improve, understand many aspects of the world and practice critical thinking.”

To improve his English skills, Tu participated in the city-level English exam. This helped Tu learn more advanced knowledge, thereby supplementing his vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structure.

With an IELTS score of 8.5, Tu is exempted from taking the English exam in the 2023 high school graduation exam. However, Tu still registered to take this exam for university admission and achieved a score of 10 in English.

The results achieved during the English learning process were a "push" to help Tu be more confident in his abilities, creating motivation to enter the lecture hall, continuing to conquer the goal of in-depth study and research on English.

“When I enter university, I will take advantage of my English strength to access a rich source of foreign documents to help broaden my knowledge, confidently communicate with international friends and find scholarships to study abroad,” Tu shared.
