In Quang Nam, because their parents are busy, many students don't get haircuts, and they suffer from itching and lice. Therefore, teachers at a boarding school in the mountainous Nam Tra My district have been helping them.
On the last day of April, during recess, Ms. A Lang Thi Diep, a teacher at Tra Tap Ethnic Boarding Primary School in Nam Tra My district, called three students out to the hallway to get a haircut.
The 26-year-old female teacher skillfully used the scissors and clippers, completing the task in nearly half an hour. Afterward, she removed the cloth covering the students and used a sponge to wipe away the hair clinging to their necks and shirts. The students rushed to the water tap to wash their faces and hands, then returned to class to continue their lesson.

Ms. Diep, originally from Tay Giang district, has been working at Tra Tap Ethnic Boarding Primary School since 2023. She is the least senior among the seven female teachers at the main school campus.
As soon as she started teaching, Ms. Diep noticed that many students were uncomfortable with their long hair, especially in the hot weather. Diep recalled her childhood, when life in the ethnic minority region was difficult and her parents often returned home late at night after working in the fields. Her teachers often helped her cut her hair.
Therefore, Ms. Diep spent 250,000 dong buying clippers, scissors, and a piece of cloth with the intention of cutting her students' hair. Each time she went to get her own haircut, the young teacher meticulously observed the barber to imitate them.
"At first, many students refused, afraid that I would cut their hair badly. I had to buy candy and snacks to entice them," Ms. Diep recounted. Gradually, the students proactively asked her for haircuts, and now all 32 students in the class have their hair cut by their homeroom teacher.

Cutting students' hair is also a familiar task for teacher Nguyen Thi Thu Ba, a colleague of Ms. Diep. Ms. Ba has worked in the mountainous district of Nam Tra My for over 14 years, and for about 10 of those years, she has been cutting students' hair.
"We used to cut hair with scissors, but now we have clippers, so it's much faster," said the 35-year-old female teacher.
Before cutting, Ms. Ba would examine the hair to see what style would look best. She also asked about the students' preferences to accommodate them if possible. For the male students, she used clippers to quickly trim their hair, then used scissors to keep it neat. For the female students, the female teacher mainly trimmed the back and cut the bangs. Many students had lice on their heads, so she often parted their hair to find and remove them. Therefore, the haircut took longer.
"I just do simple haircuts; my skills aren't as good as the barbers at the salon, but I'm very satisfied because the students now have neat and tidy hair," she said.
Fifth-grade student Nguyen Thi Diem Chau enjoys having her hair cut by her teacher whenever it gets long. "The teacher cuts hair beautifully and kindly. Many of my classmates also like it," she shared.
According to the two teachers, parents approve of cutting their children's hair. Many mothers even come to ask Ms. Ba to cut their children's hair for them.

Nam Tra My is a difficult mountainous district in Quang Nam province, with complex terrain, mostly hills and steep slopes. More than 97% of the population here belongs to ethnic minorities, mostly Ca Dong and Xe Dang people.
Tra Tap Ethnic Boarding Primary School is located about 5 km from the district center. According to Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hung, the deputy principal, the school has one main campus and 10 satellite campuses, with nearly 460 students. Of these, more than 330 are boarding students, mostly from impoverished families.
Therefore, for many years, in addition to teaching, the teachers at the school have also taken care of the children's meals and sleep. Besides Ms. Ba and Ms. Diep, the other teachers at the school are all skilled at cutting students' hair.
