The TikTok deal between the US and China is nearing completion.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the US and China have reached a final agreement on TikTok. The two sides are expected to officially finalize the deal at the end of October in South Korea, during a meeting between President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping.
The agreement is built on the framework agreed upon in Madrid last month. President Trump then signed an executive order to facilitate the deal. Bessent said his task was to convince China to approve the transaction, and that has been accomplished in the last two days.
According to Trump's executive order, TikTok's US operations – including its recommendation algorithm, source code, and content moderation system – will be overseen by a new board of directors. Oracle will be responsible for security, and investors in the new joint venture include Oracle, Fox Corp, Andreessen Horowitz, and Silver Lake Management.
US Treasury Secretary Bessent made the statement from Kuala Lumpur, where US-China trade negotiators also reached a framework agreement on tariffs and other trade issues. Rare earth minerals – essential for chip manufacturing and technology – were also among the topics discussed.
Apple improves battery replacement capabilities on the MacBook Pro M5.

The MacBook Pro M5 was Apple's first model to allow users to replace the battery without removing the trackpad. This was a small but notable design improvement, making repairs less complicated.
Although the trackpad doesn't need to be removed, the battery replacement process is still quite complicated. Apple only provides a "Top Case with Battery and Keyboard" unit—meaning users have to purchase the entire main frame with keyboard and battery. This requires removing numerous screws and unrelated components, making self-repair difficult.
The M5 version is equipped with a 72.6Wh battery, slightly larger than the 72.4Wh battery of the previous generation. While not yet at the level of easy repair, Apple is making small strides in improving component replacement. The fact that the trackpad doesn't need to be removed is a positive sign for users who enjoy repairs.
IBM brings quantum algorithms to conventional chips.
IBM announced that it has successfully run a crucial quantum error correction algorithm on a conventional AMD chip. This is a major step forward in the commercialization of quantum computers, which are expected to solve problems that traditional computers would take thousands of years to solve.
Quantum computers use qubits, which are highly sensitive and prone to errors. IBM has developed an algorithm to correct this error, and they have now demonstrated that it can run in real time on AMD-manufactured FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) chips – readily available and relatively inexpensive chips on the market.
Jay Gambetta, IBM's research director, said the algorithm not only performs well but also runs 10 times faster than the minimum requirement. This demonstrates the enormous potential for practical applications of this technology.
IBM was aiming to build a quantum computer called Starling by 2029. However, the algorithm was completed a year earlier than originally planned.
