Da Nang develops library system to become open knowledge center of the community

Vice Chairwoman of the City People's Committee Nguyen Thi Anh Thi acknowledged that the project "Developing the public library system of Da Nang city in the period of 2021 - 2025 and orientation to 2030" has an orientation for the city's public library system to deploy activities in each year effectively and in depth; contributing to building and developing reading culture in particular and the library sector in general.

“After 5 years of implementation, the public library is gradually transforming itself, becoming an open, friendly, attractive and closer learning space for all classes of people,” the Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee affirmed.

To implement the next phase of the project, the Vice Chairman of the City People's Committee assigned the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism to preside over and coordinate with agencies, units and localities to focus on researching, consulting, proposing an investment roadmap, and completing the city's public library system in terms of facilities and infrastructure.

Promote the application of information technology and digital transformation in library activities, especially at commune and ward level libraries.

At the same time, improve the quality of operations and services to attract readers, maximize the effectiveness of invested institutions; build and develop a team of library staff with sufficient capacity and qualifications to meet work requirements in the new situation.

Vice Chairwoman of the City People's Committee Nguyen Thi Anh Thi requested relevant departments, branches, sectors and localities to actively coordinate and support the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism in performing assigned tasks for the common development of the city.

The City assigned the Department of Education and Training to strengthen the development and implementation of reading skills education programs, systematically building reading habits for students from preschool and primary school levels.

According to the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, after 5 years of implementation, the basic goals for the entire public library system in the city have been ensured to follow the project's roadmap.

The public library network has expanded. At the end of 2021, when the project began, the entire system had 1 city library, 6 district libraries, and 12 commune and ward reading rooms.

By June 2025, the city will have 7 more commune and ward reading rooms in operation, bringing the total number of communes and wards with reading rooms and 3 private libraries serving the community to 19.

Of which, 6 district and county libraries (old) are invested in information technology infrastructure, networked, and use the common Ilib-web library software to connect book data throughout the system and access and use the common electronic library from the Da Nang General Science Library (now Da Nang Library).

The entire public library system of Da Nang city (old) has 467,235 paper books/1,188,374 people.

On average, each Da Nang resident has about 1.2 copies of books (the target for the 2021 - 2025 period is 0.8 copies/person); 50% of the city's population uses public library services (about 595,000 users).

On average, each year the public library system of Da Nang city (old) is granted an additional budget of 17,650 paper books, 550 e-books, 235 newspapers and magazines. 1,008,021 people/1,691,260 documents are circulated.

On this occasion, 3 groups and 12 individuals received Certificates of Merit from the Chairman of the City People's Committee; 7 groups and 15 individuals received Certificates of Merit from the Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism for their outstanding achievements in implementing the Project "Developing the public library system of Da Nang city for the period 2021 - 2025 and orientation to 2030".
