Sinner clears injury doubts, wins quickly at US Open

(Dan Tri) - Jannik Sinner erased injury doubts when he played brilliantly and won quickly with a score of 6-1, 6-1, 6-2 against Vit Kopriva in the first round of the US Open.

Jannik Sinner has made a convincing start to his US Open title defence, ending any doubts about his ability to become the first man to do so since Roger Federer in 2008. In the early morning of August 27, the defending champion easily defeated Czech player Vit Kopriva with an overwhelming score of 6-1, 6-1, 6-2 to book his place in the second round.

Sinner, who retired from the Cincinnati final against Carlos Alcaraz last week, was in fine form in the 1 hour, 38 minute match. The No. 1 seed moved fluidly and hit precise shots, making it difficult for Kopriva to deal with the Italian’s attacking style on Arthur Ashe Stadium. This was also the first time the two players had faced each other.

"I feel very good physically. I've had a few good days of training, especially the last few days. I feel like I'm in good shape physically. The first round match was also very good, so I'm very happy," Sinner shared after the match.

The Italian, who has won the last three major hard-court tournaments (Australian Open 2024, 2025 and US Open 2024), will continue his quest for a fifth Grand Slam title and third of the season when he takes on Alexei Popyrin. The Australian defeated Emil Ruusuvuori 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(3).

The win also keeps Sinner in the race for the world No. 1 spot. If Alcaraz reaches the same round as Sinner or beats him in New York, he will return to the No. 1 spot for the first time since September 10, 2023. Sinner also needs to reach at least the third round to maintain his chances.

Elsewhere, 10th seed Lorenzo Musetti produced an impressive 6-7(3), 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 comeback against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. This was Musetti's second win since the Roland Garros semi-final in June. The Italian will face either Quentin Halys or David Goffin in the second round.

Denis Shapovalov also advanced after defeating Winston-Salem champion Marton Fucsovics 6-4, 6-4, 6-0. The 27th seed from Canada reached the quarterfinals in New York in 2020 and has won two titles this year. Alexander Bublik also got a win, defeating former champion Marin Cilic 6-4, 6-1, 6-4.
