Students don't come to class, so teachers come to their homes.
This school year, A Ngo Primary and Secondary School has nearly 650 students, 100% of whom are children of ethnic minorities living in villages in A Ngo commune. A large number of these students come from poor or near-poor households, so their education faces many difficulties.
Mr. Ngo Duy Hung, Deputy Principal of A Ngo Primary and Secondary School, said that in recent years, most students have been aware of the school opening schedule. However, there are still some students who are not present in the locality, mainly because they are accompanying their parents to work far away or visiting relatives. Therefore, the teachers have actively informed and supported these students to return to the locality at the beginning of the new school year.
Mr. Hoang Duong Hoa, homeroom teacher of class 6A2 at A Ngo Primary and Secondary School, said that he has made five trips to the villages to visit the homes of students. In the first few trips, the male teacher reminded the students to come to school on the scheduled day to prepare for the start of the school year. For students who were reminded but did not come, Mr. Hoa would go to them to find out the reason.
Most recently, Mr. Hoa visited the home of student Ho Van Ngon, after Ngon had missed several school assembly sessions. Ngon's family lives in La Lay village (A Ngo commune), is classified as a poor household, and is 12km away from the school. Upon arriving at the house, the teacher met Ngon and his father and learned that Ngon did not have a bicycle and was too embarrassed to ask a friend for one, so he didn't know how to get to school.
Teacher Hoa then contacted the students at the school in La Lay village, asking them to give Ngon a ride to school. He also informed the school about Ngon's difficulties, so that when they managed to secure a bicycle, it would be given to Ngon as a priority. Later, at the next assembly, Ngon arrived at school, albeit a little late…
With persistent efforts, even students who had dropped out of school returned to attend.
According to the Department of Education and Training of Quang Tri province, as of August 31st, the entire education sector had 178,124 students, of which 41,880 were students entering the first grade.
Ms. Le Thi Huong from the Department of Education and Training of Quang Tri province stated that units are actively implementing solutions to mobilize students to attend school at the beginning of the new school year, especially in mountainous and disadvantaged areas. Educational institutions, along with all levels and sectors, have intensified their efforts to reach out to local communities and promote and encourage students and parents to send their children to school.
Thanks to effective outreach efforts, the percentage of students returning to school after the summer break has increased. Notably, 18 students who had dropped out the previous school year have returned to school this year thanks to persuasion efforts.
In this new school year, the scale of the school network is planned and arranged in a streamlined and efficient manner, creating favorable conditions for students to attend school. The entire education sector in the locality has 398 educational institutions at the preschool, general education, and vocational education/continuing education levels, including 166 preschools, 67 primary schools; 81 primary and lower secondary schools; 42 lower secondary schools; 6 lower secondary and upper secondary schools; and 24 upper secondary schools.
Educational facilities and equipment have been upgraded with increased investment towards standardization, and the percentage of solid classrooms at all levels has increased. The Quang Tri Provincial Department of Education and Training has also mobilized and connected with units, organizations, and individuals to provide thousands of gifts to disadvantaged students, encouraging them to attend school and study well.
