“Luckily, my daughter’s new house was completed before Typhoon No. 11 hit. If it were the old house, it wouldn’t have withstood the storm and the recent historic flood. Even though this area is high, the water still flooded up to the house; the receding water marks are still here,” said Mrs. Nguyen Thi Thom, Tuyet’s mother, pointing out the marks left by the flood. Beside Mrs. Thom, Tuyet excitedly said, “My family is truly lucky. The house was completed less than a week before the typhoon came. After the storm subsided, we encountered rising water everywhere. When the water receded, the house was still safe. I’m so happy! From now on, my children have a decent place to study, and my husband has a place to rest and recover.”

For 15 years working at X20 Thai Nguyen Co., Ltd., Ms. Tuyet has always been respected by her colleagues for her exemplary, meticulous, and hardworking nature. However, few people know about her difficult family circumstances: her husband has suffered from kidney failure for many years, spending more time in the hospital than at home. Her two children are young – the eldest is only 11 years old, the youngest 5 – while her mother-in-law is elderly and frail. The economic burden of the family weighs heavily on Ms. Tuyet's shoulders. Therefore, her family's dilapidated house, a single-story dwelling, has long been in disrepair, and she lacks the means to renovate it, let alone rebuild it. Recalling that time, Ms. Tuyet emotionally recounted: “For all these years, I only longed to live in a sturdy house, free from leaks and drafts, so that my children could study peacefully, my husband could rest comfortably, and my elderly mother could worry less…”
Given Ms. Tuyet's circumstances, in early 2025, the Executive Committee of the Trade Union of X20 Thai Nguyen Company Limited proposed that relevant authorities consider and provide support to Ms. Tuyet's family to build a new house using funds from the "Trade Union's Warm Home, Comradeship and Solidarity" program. With the agreement of the National Defense Trade Union Committee, the Party Committee, the leadership of X20 Joint Stock Company, and the Political Department of the General Department of Logistics and Technology, they quickly coordinated to conduct surveys, design, and prepare a total cost estimate for the house construction, facilitating the family's construction process.
On the day of the house inauguration and handover, local authorities, comrades, and residents of residential group 11, Linh Son ward, came to share their joy and celebrate with Ms. Tuyet's family, who now have a new home. In the presence of leaders from the General Department of Logistics and Technical Services, the commander of X20 Joint Stock Company, local authorities, and numerous comrades, Ms. Tuyet emotionally expressed: “I never thought I could build a house like this. If it weren't for the concern of leaders and commanders at all levels, and the trade union organization, my family would probably still be living in the old house for many more years…”
Ms. Tuyet is one of many trade union members and workers in the entire army facing housing difficulties who have received attention from leaders and commanders at all levels, especially the National Defense Trade Union Committee, through the "Trade Union Shelter, Comradeship" program since the beginning of the year. Regarding the significance of the program, Colonel Nguyen Van De, Head of the National Defense Trade Union Committee, said: Responding to the "Trade Union Shelter" program launched by the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor in 2006 to support the construction or repair of houses for trade union members and workers in difficult housing situations, the National Defense Trade Union Committee has concretized it into the "Trade Union Shelter, Comradeship" program in the Army.
The fund is funded by savings of 2,000 VND per person per month from officers and union members throughout the army. Since its implementation, thousands of union members and workers with housing difficulties have received support from this program. In 2025 alone, the National Defense Trade Union Committee provided funding to support the construction and repair of 57 "Trade Union Shelters, Comradeship" houses for 57 union members with housing difficulties, including 38 new houses and 19 repaired houses, with a total value of nearly 4 billion VND.
Through our research, we learned that, along with the policy of alleviating housing difficulties to help union members and workers overcome hardships, in recent years, the National Defense Trade Union Committee has done a good job of guiding and directing trade unions at all levels in the army to implement many specific and practical movements and models, such as: Visiting and giving gifts to union members and workers in difficult circumstances, suffering from serious illnesses, or long-term illnesses; visiting, encouraging, and providing emergency assistance to cadres, union members, and workers when facing natural disasters, epidemics, or accidents... In 2025 alone, the entire army organized more than 1,200 visits and gift-giving events to union members in difficult circumstances, suffering from serious illnesses or long-term illnesses, with a total value of over 5 billion VND; Joining hands to support workers in overcoming the consequences of recent storms and floods, the National Defense Trade Union Committee has provided assistance to 1,324 union members and workers in 16 units throughout the army affected by storms, floods, and natural disasters, with a total value of 1.6 billion VND.
These specific, practical, and humane activities not only demonstrate the role of the trade union in caring for the lives of its members but also contribute to strengthening trust and creating motivation for workers to strive, dedicate themselves, and successfully complete their assigned tasks.
