Proposal to establish squares at two national historical sites in Dong Nai

TPO - The national historical relics in Bien Hoa City, Bien Hoa Citadel and Song Pho Square, are proposed to establish two squares.

Dong Nai Department of Construction has just proposed to establish and organize two squares in Bien Hoa city: Song Pho Square and Thanh Co Square.

The national historical site of Bien Hoa Citadel (also known as Thanh Ken, in Quang Vinh ward, Bien Hoa city), is the second largest military architectural work in the South, after Gia Dinh citadel and is the only citadel in the South that still exists today. Previously, the area of Bien Hoa Citadel covered 18 hectares, but later it was reduced to about 1 hectare, with a 2-storey house built of concrete on the land. In 2014, the work was restored.

The Department of Construction proposed a plan to establish a square on the ancient citadel land. This square is surrounded by the facades of buildings and opens up along Phan Chu Trinh Street to Dong Nai River. The square space not only creates vitality for the ancient citadel but can also be used to organize community activities.

Song Pho Square is a historical site of Bien Hoa since before 1945. The square is located right at the intersection of Cach Mang Thang Tam Street and 30/4 Street. The square was ranked as a national monument in 1991 and is located quite close to Bien Hoa Citadel.

Song Pho Square today

Although it is called Song Pho Square, in reality, this is just a small roundabout, with no space for pedestrians. The space surrounding the square is mostly the headquarters of agencies, units, schools, markets, churches, and apartment buildings, which are quite crowded and often cause traffic jams during rush hours. The surrounding architectural landscape is not uniform.

The Department of Construction proposed a plan to establish a square line. Accordingly, the space of the Song Pho roundabout area, the square space is extended, almost like a street or a corridor to create a feeling that the main axis is not in a conflicting position, facing the Dong Nai River. At the beginning and end of the square, there are key works to transition to other urban spaces, this is also an area for people to walk or organize cultural and artistic activities.

According to the Department of Construction, these are all areas with historical, cultural and architectural values, so the establishment and reorganization of the two squares above is based on the principle: No intervention, no direct impact on the relics; focus on renovating the space and landscape to increase the value of the relics, increase the connection environment, community education , sightseeing, exhibition of pictures, history of the formation of Bien Hoa land; open small-scale square spaces, spaces to satisfy the needs of commercial and cultural services, nostalgic colors. The square space is connected with the surrounding public works to create a series of rich activities for the square, the daily vitality of the square, avoiding being just a space used for meetings a few times a year.
