DNVN - Through its member company FPT Consulting Japan, FPT Corporation and Japanese technology corporation SCSK have just announced a plan to establish a joint venture COBOL PARK, focusing on solving challenges in maintaining and modernizing "legacy systems", especially mainframe technology.
COBOL PARK is expected to be established by March 2025 with the aim of providing human resources and technology transformation solutions to promote modernization in various fields in Japan. The joint venture focuses on the 500 billion yen system transformation market of the Japanese financial industry.
The new joint venture also demonstrates FPT and SCSK’s commitment to jointly solving Japan’s “Digital Cliff 2025” problem, which the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) uses to describe the obsolescence of IT systems in some sectors and the shortage of technological resources in Japan.
In particular, the IT systems that once underpinned many important sectors in Japan, such as finance, have become obsolete. Meanwhile, the rapidly aging workforce of engineers using the COBOL programming language has created an urgent need to modernize these legacy technology platforms to ensure the continuity and sustainability of Japanese businesses.
COBOL PARK was established based on the successful cooperation between FPT and SCSK in providing IT services in the Asia-Pacific region since 2018. This joint venture will take advantage of SCSK's expertise and FPT's technological capabilities, global presence, and abundant human resources. FPT will also focus on exploiting artificial intelligence technologies and developing AI integration models specifically for modernizing large computer systems for optimal efficiency.
