Quang Tri continues to control African swine fever and restore herds
At the time when African swine fever was spreading most strongly, Quang Tri recorded 472 villages in 65 communes and wards with the epidemic, causing nearly 12,500 households to suffer heavy losses due to pig deaths and forced culling. Facing the risk of spreading, the Quang Tri Department of Livestock and Veterinary Medicine closely coordinated with local authorities to deploy containment and control measures, from epidemiological surveillance to increased vaccination and disinfection instructions. Veterinary forces always stay close to the grassroots, promptly supporting communes and wards in disease prevention work.
Thanks to drastic measures, by the end of November, the entire Quang Tri province had 53 communes and wards that met the conditions to declare the end of the epidemic and 12 other localities had no new outbreaks for more than 15 days. At the same time, foot-and-mouth disease was also controlled, with no new cases of disease in livestock.
To support herd restoration and consumption of disease-free products, veterinary forces have taken nearly 1,100 samples at 321 farms to monitor African swine fever, thereby facilitating the sale of nearly 138,000 pigs. Many farms such as Mr. Ho Thanh Hai's facility in Bo Trach commune have maintained a stable herd of more than 1,700 pigs thanks to close coordination with veterinary forces to carry out disinfection and epidemic management.
At the Livestock Breeding Station of the Quang Tri Province Agricultural Breeding Center, more than 110 sows are safely protected, providing about 2,500 breeding pigs each year. Despite difficulties, this unit still maintains production and improves the quality of breeding pigs to meet the needs of herd restoration, contributing to stabilizing the supply of pork for the market at the end of the year.
