The journey of creating ST25 rice: From 'playing for fun' to a new symbol of Vietnamese rice.
At the " Science, Technology, Innovation and Digital Transformation Week" in Can Tho on December 9th, the story of engineer Ho Quang Cua about his journey in breeding the ST25 rice variety attracted the attention of many delegates. He recalled that more than a century ago, Vietnamese rice was renowned in Europe; the Mekong Delta region also possessed many delicious varieties, but they gradually disappeared when the new rice variety revolution emerged.
The ST25 research team initially started "for fun," but the more they worked on it, the more they realized the need to standardize the process: shortening the growth period, eliminating dependence on photoperiod, and ensuring year-round yield. Local support, the boldness of farmers, and the domestic demand for fragrant rice spurred the team to pursue the breeding program.
Since 1980, Mr. Cua began collecting and experimenting with fragrant rice varieties. In the late 1990s, he noticed that the ST3 variety had qualities close to Thai rice. By 2001, the origin of ST3 was identified as VDD20, thus opening up a direction for further crossbreeding with the Tam Tien Vua variety. After more than 7 years of crossbreeding and selection, ST25 was put into national trials and completed in 2018.
ST25 possesses unique qualities, truly reaching its full flavor when grown in coastal areas. According to Mr. Cua, the complex hybrid combination allows ST25 to adapt widely, from the South to the North, including highlands. In particular, ST25 is becoming a "shield" against climate change in rice-shrimp farming areas: it only requires 90 days of freshwater during the rainy season for cultivation, and it significantly reduces emissions thanks to the repeated drying of the fields.
