Hanoi urgently builds 8 lakes covering nearly 150 hectares, 'rescuing' the streets before the 2026 rainy season

The Hanoi People's Committee has just requested relevant units to urgently renovate rivers, upgrade pumping stations, and build eight regulating lakes with a total area of ​​nearly 150 hectares to cope with flooding during the 2026 rainy season.

Vice Chairman of Hanoi People's Committee Duong Duc Tuan has just issued a plan to overcome flooding in the area. The plan aims to speed up the development progress and complete the drainage system according to the planning. Along with that, it proposes a number of solutions to remove difficulties and obstacles, in which the focus is on solutions to invest in urgent projects to quickly overcome flooding when it rains heavily.

For areas that have invested in a complete drainage system such as the To Lich basin, Mr. Duong Duc Tuan requested to focus on promoting the drainage efficiency of the existing system, bringing water as quickly as possible to drainage sources and key pumping stations, ensuring fast drainage with rain of 310 mm/2 days and 70 mm/h.

For areas that have not received synchronous investment or have not received investment such as the left and right Nhue basins, relevant units need to organize and implement drainage system investment projects using budget capital according to regulations.

In urban areas, it is necessary to ensure synchronous connection with the city's general drainage network, limit flooding; control illegal dumping of materials, waste, mud, construction soil... causing blockage of drainage systems in urban areas and surrounding areas.

Regarding specific solutions, Mr. Duong Duc Tuan requested to strengthen the management, maintenance and upkeep of the drainage system; Strengthen the protection against encroachment of lakes and ponds, water surface areas to ensure landscape and serve urban drainage regulation; Complete the repair and maintenance of key works (pumping stations, regulating dams, culverts across the dike...) before the rainy season.

The Vice Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee also requested to speed up the progress of the urgent construction investment project (before the 2026 rainy season). Specifically, renovating and constructing new sewers and drainage ditches to solve flooding in the area along Thang Long Avenue; renovating the Kim Nguu downstream route connecting To Lich River with Yen So Pumping Station.

The city's official dispatch also requested to renovate the Thuy Phuong canal to urgently handle the water supply to the To Lich river and strengthen the solution to local flooding in the areas of Resco, Ecohome, Diplomatic Corps, West West Lake, Ciputra and neighboring areas; renovate the Kim Nguu downstream route connecting the To Lich river with the Yen So pumping station.

The leaders of the Hanoi People's Committee requested investment in the construction of 8 regulating lakes including: Chem Lake (9 hectares); Co Nhue 1 (10 hectares); Co Nhue 2 (9.8 hectares); Thuy Phuong 2 (14.5 hectares); Lien Mac 1 (13 hectares) in Thuong Cat ward; Phu Do (31.5 hectares) in Tu Liem ward; Yen Nghia 2 (5 hectares) and Yen Nghia 1 (20 hectares).

In addition, Mr. Duong Duc Tuan also requested to review rivers and canals that no longer serve agricultural production and convert them to serve urban drainage; purchase specialized equipment such as pump trucks, pumps, and other auxiliary equipment to serve drainage work.
