The Hanoi Department of Education and Training recently held a conference to evaluate the quality of the 2022-2023 high school graduation exam and propose solutions to improve the quality of the 2023-2024 high school graduation exam. Mr. Le Hong Vu, Deputy Head of the Secondary Education Department (Hanoi Department of Education and Training), stated that in the 2022-2023 school year, Hanoi had 98,642 candidates taking the high school graduation exam, including 85,856 candidates from regular high schools and 13,056 candidates from continuing education programs.
The results showed that 98,206 candidates passed the graduation exam, accounting for 99.56%; an increase of 0.27% compared to the previous academic year, and an increase of 11 places in the national ranking (from 27th to 16th).
Students applying to university using foreign language certificates are not even trying to pass the high school graduation exam?
Among high schools, 198 units had a graduation rate equal to or higher than the previous academic year. Of these, 112 units had a higher graduation rate than the previous academic year, and 149 units achieved a 100% graduation rate , higher than the previous academic year.
Notably, many schools in suburban areas have made efforts to achieve a 100% high school graduation rate, such as Bac Luong Son High School, Tran Dang Ninh High School, Tay Son High School, and Tran Phu High School in Ba Vi… From 2018 to the present, 26 high schools across the city have consistently achieved a 100% graduation rate.
However, according to the Hanoi Department of Education and Training's report, the city's high school graduation exam results still fell short of the department's expectations. Specifically, 53 schools that previously had lower-than-average graduation rates showed no improvement last year.
According to the Hanoi Department of Education and Training's assessment, schools with lower-than-average or no improvement in graduation rates are those with low entrance scores and students facing learning difficulties. Furthermore, these areas often face significant socio-economic challenges, and coordination between families and schools remains inadequate.
Some schools have high graduation rates but unusually low grades in certain subjects.
Notably, the Department of Education and Training pointed out that for many years, Hanoi students have been applying to universities using international certificates, regardless of their high school graduation exam results. Therefore, many students believe that simply passing the graduation exam is sufficient, without needing to compete or strive for higher scores, leading to lower average scores in some subjects.
Some schools have high entrance exam scores and a 100% graduation rate, yet students still have unusually low scores in certain subjects. For example, Le Quy Don High School (Ha Dong) ranks 15th in the city in terms of overall graduation exam scores, but its chemistry score is only 139th.
Xuan Giang High School ranked 44th in the city in terms of overall graduation exam scores, but ranked 136th in English. Doan Ket High School - Hai Ba Trung District ranked 46th in the city in terms of overall graduation exam scores, but ranked 108th in Geography.
Xuan Dinh High School ranked 32nd in the city in terms of overall graduation exam scores, but ranked 84th in Civic Education. Quoc Oai High School ranked 50th in the city in terms of overall graduation exam scores, but ranked 112th and 128th in Biology and Chemistry respectively...
The Department of Education and Training requires an accurate assessment of students' abilities in order to organize appropriate review sessions.
Mr. Tran The Cuong, Director of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, requested that schools continue to review the graduation results of recent years in each class, analyze the causes, and propose specific solutions.
At the same time, the units focused on building a system of review materials suitable for the school's target audience; guiding students on the process and methods of taking exams, especially techniques for taking multiple-choice tests.
In addition, schools should proactively review and rearrange teaching programs and plans to suit practical conditions; establish professional groups between clusters, between schools within clusters, and within the city to share experiences and review materials; and conduct accurate assessments of students' abilities to organize appropriate review classes.
