First graders in Can Tho City are excited on the first day of school.

GD&TĐ - On the morning of August 25, more than 40,000 first graders in Can Tho City excitedly returned to school. The school and teachers organized many activities to welcome the students.

On the morning of August 25, Ms. Tran Thi Huyen, Acting Director of the Department of Education and Training of Can Tho City, and a working delegation visited a number of schools to grasp the situation of the 2025-2026 school year.

After visiting the schools, Ms. Tran Thi Huyen highly appreciated the preparations for the new school year of the units. At Ngo Quyen Primary School and Mac Dinh Chi Primary School (Ninh Kieu Ward), at around 6:00 a.m., cadres, teachers, and staff gathered at the school to welcome students.

Many parents brought their children to school early. Despite the heavy rain, the school organized the student pick-up and drop-off, with teachers holding umbrellas to welcome and guide students and parents into the classroom.

Each class is organized by the teachers to have fun activities for the students to get acquainted with new friends, new teachers and new school. The staff regularly cleans and wipes away stagnant water to prevent students from slipping.

After students are guided to their classes, homeroom teachers and students introduce themselves, get acquainted, and disseminate school and class rules. Schools also inform parents about school regulations, school year time frames, textbook types, etc.

To prepare well for the new school year, all teachers, staff and workers gathered at the school to welcome first graders. In the 2025-2026 school year, the school has 364 first graders. The total number of students in the school is 1,755/53 classes. The number of classes, rooms and teachers is enough to meet the needs of the new school year.

According to the Department of Education and Training of Can Tho City, at the primary level, the city currently has 488 schools, of which 484 are public schools and 4 are non-public schools. In addition, there are 26 inter-level schools with primary level (16 public schools, 10 non-public schools), 1 Inclusive Education Center, 1 School for the Disabled, and 1 School for Children with Disabilities. As of August 13, 2025, the city has 41,674 first graders, reaching 88.32%. The forecast number of students in the 2025-2026 school year is 250,853 students/8,647 classes.

According to the 2025-2026 school year schedule for preschool, general education and continuing education in Can Tho city, preschool and primary school students will return to school on August 28 (grade 1 students will return to school on August 25); secondary school, high school and continuing education students will return to school on August 29 (grade 9 and 12 students will return to school on August 22). Schools in Can Tho city will simultaneously open on September 5, 2025.
