(Dan Tri Newspaper) - Representatives from Thang Long High School ( Hanoi ) stated that they have worked with the parent representatives of each class, requesting that they refrain from soliciting donations by setting fixed fees.
Some parents of students at Thang Long High School have complained that students from two 11th-grade classes had to pay 800,000 VND to perform in a school cultural program.
According to the messages provided by the parents, the class's parent committee hired a choreographer and class representatives to create the program. To fund it, the parent committee proposed a contribution of 800,000 VND per student.
"Our parent committee sincerely hopes for the support and cooperation of all parents in this important event for their children."
"In addition to the required fee of 800,000 VND, the Parents' Association is appealing to benefactors to contribute more to support activities such as renting practice rooms and preparing drinking water for the children," the message read.
Previously, at the beginning of the school year, parents of the class contributed 3 million VND per student to support their children's activities throughout the year at school. Therefore, parents believe that such a contribution is too expensive for a school-level cultural performance program.
This cultural program will be organized as a 45-minute live show in early February 2025.
Following the tradition of Thang Long High School, monthly cultural and artistic programs are organized by the students themselves. Each live show is a collaboration between one or two classes, with students independently developing ideas, scripts, and performances. Teachers only play a supporting role.
Speaking with a reporter from Dan Tri newspaper , a representative from Thang Long High School stated: "From the beginning of the school year, in discussions with parents, the school has prioritized the following: the arts and culture program for each class should be implemented according to its purpose, which is to create opportunities for connection among all students, to give all students a chance to showcase their abilities and talents, and to promote a spirit of economy, practicality, and maximizing students' potential."
The school has agreed in parent-teacher meetings and homeroom teacher meetings that: Classroom performing arts activities should be conducted economically, focusing on substance, with students independently editing, scripting, and creating, avoiding hiring choreographers or scriptwriters, and avoiding renting elaborate costumes. Students are encouraged to wear the school uniform for performances.
Upon receiving feedback, the school worked with the classes and requested that the parent-teacher association, if it were to solicit donations, do so on a voluntary basis and not set a fixed amount. The amount donated by individuals or organizations should be entirely up to their discretion.
Previously, a similar incident occurred at Nguyen Chi Thanh Secondary School in Ho Chi Minh City. The parent committee of one class planned to spend 21 million VND on a cultural performance to celebrate November 20th (Teachers' Day), causing a backlash within the class.
The school then asked the class parents' committee to stop this contribution.
Speaking to a reporter from Dan Tri newspaper, Ms. VPC, a music teacher at a multi-level school in Hanoi, said that since art was included in the new general education curriculum as an important component of comprehensive education, school arts and culture must also change accordingly to truly shoulder the responsibility of aesthetic education for students.
Many schools are innovating their teaching and learning methods, also using art as a tool to convey knowledge, especially in interdisciplinary education .
"The factors mentioned above have impacted the 'quality' and 'quantity' of school arts and culture, making this activity more professional. To achieve professionalism, funding is necessary. Most schools need the support and cooperation of parents to socialize arts and culture activities," the female teacher shared.
