UN Security Council passes resolution on armed conflict, Russia abstains

Resolution 2730 was recently adopted by the Security Council with the support of 14/15 members, including provisions to protect aid workers and requiring parties in armed conflicts to fully comply with their obligations under international law.

On May 24, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) passed Resolution 2730, calling on countries to respect and protect aid workers, UN staff and related people.

The above resolution received the support of 14/15 members of the Security Council. Russia abstained.

Resolution 2730 calls upon States and parties to armed conflicts to respect and ensure respect for applicable international humanitarian law in all circumstances. In addition, the Resolution requires parties to armed conflicts to fully comply with their obligations under international law, including international human rights law and international humanitarian law, including obligations relating to the respect for and protection of humanitarian workers, United Nations personnel and other persons involved.

In particular, the resolution calls on parties to armed conflicts to respect the principles of distinction, proportionality and caution in conducting hostilities and to refrain from attacking, destroying or removing objects indispensable for the survival of civilians.
