Specialist II Doctor Vu Thanh Liem, Deputy Director of Thai Binh Children's Hospital, quickly informed: On the evening of December 1, the unit received an 11-month-old patient in a state of suspected swallowing a foreign object, a sewing needle.
The family said the child was left with his grandmother and went to play at a neighbor’s house, where there were many sewing items. While playing, the child accidentally picked up a sewing needle with a round plastic tip and swallowed it.

The hospital took an abdominal X-ray and recorded the image of a foreign object located at the corresponding position of the L1-L3 vertebrae, consistent with a sewing needle foreign object in the digestive tract. The child was transferred to the Gastroenterology department for monitoring, consultation and emergency treatment.
The consultation was attended by specialists from the Department of Gastroenterology and the Department of Orthopedics and Burns. The team agreed to prescribe emergency endoscopic intervention to avoid the risk of the foreign object moving deeper and causing serious damage.
Through endoscopy, the child's esophageal and gastric mucosa was not inflamed or ulcerated; in the duodenum D1-D2, a 4cm long sewing needle foreign body, one pointed end, one round button-shaped plastic end, was found lying in the intestine.
The doctors skillfully used a specialized noose to reach the correct location and safely remove the foreign object. The procedure went smoothly, without causing scratches or bleeding complications.
After the intervention, the child was awake, eating normally again, had a soft abdomen, no vomiting, no pain. It is known that the child's health is stable and has been discharged from the hospital to return home.
