The Indonesian government may grant dual citizenship to people of Indonesian origin to attract more skilled workers to the country.
The Indonesian government plans to grant dual citizenship to former Indonesian citizens living abroad, according to Indonesia's Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Luhut Pandjaitan.

Speaking before Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, who pledged a $1.7 billion investment in Indonesia, Luhut said he would invite the Indonesian diaspora abroad and grant them dual citizenship. This would help bring talented Indonesian citizens back to the country. According to data from the Indonesian Directorate General of Immigration, nearly 4,000 Indonesians became Singaporean citizens between 2019 and 2022.
Indonesian immigration authorities have not yet commented on this information.
The issue of dual citizenship caused some controversy in 2016 when President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo removed Arcandra Tahar from his position as Minister of Energy and Mining less than a month after he took office. At the time, it was reported that Arcandra Tahar held both American and Indonesian citizenship.
Under current regulations, Indonesia does not recognize dual citizenship for adults, and children with two passports must choose one and relinquish the other upon reaching the age of 18.
