On August 3, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced the results of its investigation, stating that Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed by a short-range projectile containing approximately 7 kg of explosives, launched from outside the guesthouse where he resided in Tehran.
The statement also reiterated Tehran's intention to respond strongly "at an appropriate time."
Meanwhile, the New York Times reported on the same day that Iran had arrested more than 20 people in the investigation into the attack. Among those arrested were high-ranking intelligence officers, military officers, and staff from a guesthouse managed by the IRGC in Tehran, where the attack occurred.
Also on August 3rd, the Hamas movement announced that it had launched a broad consultation process among its leadership and organizations to select a new leader to replace Ismail Haniyeh, who was recently assassinated in Iran.
According to Hamas, although several of the movement's leaders have been assassinated over the past decades, Hamas has quickly opted for replacements in accordance with the organization's rules.
Hamas's executive groups and the main advisory body Shura are continuing their work and will release the results of the consultation once the process is complete.
Leader Haniyeh was killed in Tehran on the morning of July 31 after attending the inauguration of Iran's new President Masoud Pezeshkian.
