Fewer flights, number of passengers passing through Can Tho airport drops sharply

Can Tho Airport has a designed capacity of 3-5 million passengers/year but by 2024 it will only reach 1.3 million passengers. Currently, there are only 7 domestic routes and 2 international routes from this airport.

At the conference to review tourism work in 2024 and deploy tasks for 2025, the Steering Committee for Tourism Development of Can Tho City said that one of the limitations and difficulties of the city's tourism is that the exploitation of flight routes at Can Tho International Airport is still limited in capacity.

Since Bamboo Airways has stopped operating flights since November 2023, there are currently only two airlines (Vietjet and Vietnam Airlines ) operating seven domestic routes from Can Tho to Hanoi, Da Nang, Hai Phong, Vinh, Da Lat, Phu Quoc and Con Dao.

In addition, this airport only operates two international routes to South Korea and Taiwan. Therefore, the transport volume in 2024 will reach 6,495 take-offs and landings (down 28%), serving more than 1.3 million passengers (down 25% compared to the same period in 2023).

Faced with the above situation, the Steering Committee for Tourism Development of Can Tho City has proposed many solutions, including strengthening links and cooperation with provinces and cities to create a chain of unique and distinctive tourism products to effectively promote local tourism resources.

Encourage and facilitate the opening of new flight routes connecting with domestic and foreign provinces and cities, in addition to exploiting inter-regional, focused and key sightseeing and tourism programs and routes.

Speaking at the conference, Vice Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee Nguyen Thuc Hien requested to promote tourism development in the new situation, with the goal of striving for Can Tho city's tourism industry to basically become a spearhead economic sector by 2025, building tourism products with high quality and competitiveness.

Mr. Hien requested that the specialized agencies re-evaluate the effectiveness of approved tourism-related topics and projects to have effective solutions in implementation and mobilize all resources for investment in tourism development in the fields of infrastructure construction, technical facilities, high-quality services, luxury accommodation facilities, large-scale entertainment areas and creating quality human resources to ensure the best service for the entertainment needs of tourists coming to Can Tho city.

Can Tho International Airport was inaugurated in two phases in early 2011, with a designed capacity of serving 3 - 5 million passengers/year.

By 2019, this airport was operating quite well with 10 domestic routes and 4 international routes, but in the following years many routes stopped operating.
