Blood reserves decrease, many hospitals call for blood donations

The amount of blood received at many blood transfusion centers across the country is currently only 40%-50% of the actual demand. Many hospitals are concerned that the risk of blood shortage will affect emergency care and patient treatment.

In recent days, the Can Tho City Department of Health has been calling on people to donate blood, as the blood supply at the Can Tho City Hematology and Blood Transfusion Hospital is only about 50% of the actual demand. This situation is causing many hospitals in the Mekong Delta region to face the risk of a serious blood shortage.

In Ho Chi Minh City, the Ho Chi Minh City Center for Humanitarian Blood Donation and the Ho Chi Minh City Blood Transfusion and Hematology Hospital have also issued a notice calling on people to donate blood to ensure timely blood supply for the city and the southwestern provinces. Dr. Tran Thanh Tung, Director of the Blood Transfusion Center at Cho Ray Hospital, said that in the past two weeks, the amount of blood received has decreased by about 40%.

Analyzing the reasons, Dr. Tran Thanh Tung suggested that summer is the time when people travel and students return home, so the number of blood donors tends to decrease. Meanwhile, the demand for blood for treatment and emergency care does not decrease, and is even at a high level. In addition, from July 1st, the merger of localities also led to certain changes in the organization of humanitarian blood donation activities due to the change in geographical areas.

According to Dr. Tran Thanh Tung, previously, the Blood Transfusion Center of Cho Ray Hospital received blood from five provinces: Dong Nai, Binh Phuoc, Ba Ria - Vung Tau , Binh Duong, and Tay Ninh. After the merger of Binh Duong, Ba Ria - Vung Tau, and Ho Chi Minh City, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health and Cho Ray Hospital, along with related units, agreed that from now until the end of 2025, the blood receiving area of the Cho Ray Blood Transfusion Center will remain unchanged, ensuring smooth and effective medical operations.

The change in blood donation locations will be implemented in 2026. At the same time, Dr. Tran Thanh Tung affirmed that although the amount of blood received has decreased, the blood bank remains stable at approximately 4,000 units. Therefore, Cho Ray Hospital guarantees a sufficient supply of blood to hospitals in the Southeast region, serving the purpose of treating and saving lives.

Amidst a declining blood supply, many organizations and units in Ho Chi Minh City are actively encouraging their staff to participate in blood donation. On July 9th, Gia Dinh General Hospital, in collaboration with the Ho Chi Minh City Blood Transfusion and Hematology Hospital, organized a voluntary blood donation program with over 150 participants, receiving 125 units of blood.

Participating in the program, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Nga (24 years old, Ho Chi Minh City) shared that blood donation is a simple and meaningful way to share and save patients, and also a responsibility of young people to contribute to the community. MSc-Dr. Le Hoang Quan, Deputy Director of Gia Dinh General Hospital, emphasized: Blood donation is a noble act of saving lives and is an important factor in maintaining medical operations, especially in the context of many hospitals facing the risk of blood shortages today.
