On March 11th, Dr. Nguyen Thanh Truc, Rector of Tay Nguyen University, stated that a document had been submitted to the People's Committee of Dak Lak province requesting an expansion of the eligibility criteria for renting the dormitory to avoid waste, as the university's medical and pharmaceutical dormitory currently only houses 5 students.
This five-story dormitory, spanning nearly 3,000 square meters , is located in the heart of Tan Thanh ward (Buon Ma Thuot city). It was built and put into use in 2013 with a budget of 35 billion VND from government bonds. With 120 rooms, the dormitory serves the needs of 900-1,000 medical students studying at Tay Nguyen University. However, the number of students residing there has gradually decreased, especially from 2019 to the present, and currently, five students share two rooms.
According to Mr. Truc, the dormitory was built to serve the living, accommodation, and study needs of nearly 1,000 medical students at the university. This is especially important for fifth and sixth-year students who frequently work night shifts at the hospital. Therefore, the dormitory was built quite close to the Dak Lak Provincial General Hospital (now renamed the Central Highlands Regional General Hospital) to facilitate student internships at the hospital.

In early 2019, the Central Highlands Regional General Hospital relocated to a new headquarters, about 5km from the dormitory area. At that time, the road to the hospital was difficult and sparsely populated, so students moved from the dormitory to nearby accommodations for easier and safer internships. To avoid having rooms vacant for extended periods and wasting resources, the school flexibly allowed staff, officials, and workers to rent the rooms.
According to Mr. Truc, the rent from the school's dormitory also covers the costs of security guards and the maintenance and repair of facilities if they become dilapidated or damaged.
"According to current regulations, state-funded dormitories allow all students who need accommodation to rent them while studying. Therefore, the school has proposed to the Dak Lak Provincial People's Committee to allow students from other majors to rent accommodation in the school's medical faculty dormitory so that the facility does not go to waste or deteriorate," Mr. Truc said.
