Southwest Airlines Flight 2494 was headed to Indianapolis when a bullet struck the right side of the fuselage, just below the cockpit, as the crew prepared for takeoff, a Southwest spokesman said.
No injuries were reported. Law enforcement was notified and the aircraft was taken for maintenance."
Love Field Airport in Dallas said the security incident occurred at approximately 9:50 p.m. local time and prompted Dallas police and Dallas Fire-Rescue to respond to the scene.
Passengers were safely evacuated after the plane was damaged, the airport said.
There is currently no further information about the origin of the bullet or the circumstances of the incident.
The incident comes after recent events in Haiti, where gangs opened fire on three planes at or near the Port-au-Prince airport, prompting the Federal Aviation Administration to impose a 30-day restriction on U.S. airlines operating in the troubled Caribbean nation.
On Monday, several bullets hit a Spirit Airlines plane as it was landing at Toussaint Louverture International Airport.
In that incident, a flight attendant was injured by gunfire, forcing the plane to divert to an airport in the Dominican Republic.
