According to the Vietnam News Agency correspondent in Washington, this change aims to focus resources on real security threats to the American community. Accordingly, units under the command of U.S. Border Patrol Chief Gregory Bovino will prioritize apprehending individuals with serious criminal records. This orientation means reducing large-scale operations that previously took place in public places such as Home Depot or crowded parking lots.
According to the information released, federal agents will no longer focus on arrests based on appearance, voice, language, or simply being present at a particular location. Instead, they will target specific, clearly defined objectives, ensuring more selective and effective law enforcement.
Border Patrol officers will continue to conduct traffic checks and enforce the law, but their ability to make random arrests on the streets will be significantly reduced. This adjustment comes as the aggressive deportation campaigns under President Donald Trump are facing increasing criticism and legal challenges.
Several recent opinion polls show a decline in support for President Trump's tough immigration policies, as the media and civil society organizations continuously criticize his border protection and law enforcement strategies. However, the federal government maintains that its core objective remains protecting the safety of American citizens and maintaining law and order.
Despite adjustments to tactics, key operations continue. In New Orleans, Louisiana, Operation Catahoula Crunch is still underway, with over 250 arrests and the goal of raising that number to 5,000. This development demonstrates that the Trump administration has not abandoned its commitment to cracking down on crime and controlling illegal immigration.
