The Van Cu pho village in Dong Son commune is the cradle of pho in Nam Dinh province in particular, and Vietnamese pho in general. To develop the village's brand, the Van Cu Pho Association has developed a project titled "Development of the Van Cu Pho Village in the period 2025-2035, with a vision to 2050".
Accordingly, the project unanimously chose March 9th (lunar calendar) each year as "Van Cu Pho Traditional Day". On this day, people from Van Cu village who are involved in the pho business from all over the country and abroad will return to their hometown to offer incense and pay respects to the patron saint of the profession, and set up pho stalls to serve the people and tourists from all over.
The project outlines solutions for preserving the traditional pho making craft; including strengthening training programs and passing on traditional pho making skills to the younger generation in the village. It also proposes organizing competitions and skill contests to encourage creativity and preserve the unique identity of Van Cu pho. Furthermore, it aims to improve product quality, apply advanced technology in pho production and processing while maintaining the traditional flavor and cooking methods. Ensuring food safety and hygiene standards will build consumer trust. Finally, it seeks to develop and expand the brand, create a logo for brand recognition ("Van Cu Pho"), encourage membership recruitment and the development of the branch association, and increase participation in food fairs and exhibitions, as well as organizing cultural and culinary events to promote the distinctive, traditional pho product to domestic and international customers.
We call for investment to improve the transportation system and upgrade local pho processing facilities and restaurants to meet the needs of tourists and consumers. We also suggest combining the development of traditional crafts with craft village tourism, researching and developing a tourism model that showcases the traditional pho-making process in Van Cu village; and coordinating the organization of tours and food festivals to attract tourists and contribute to local economic development.
The project outlines specific goals: For the period 2025-2030, focus on preserving and developing product quality, building brand recognition, and establishing basic infrastructure; coordinate the organization of conferences to promote investment in the craft village. For the period 2030-2035, expand the market for the Van Cu pho brand internationally; promote tourism in the craft village and improve the management and preservation system of local cultural heritage, contributing to the promotion of the image and culture of the Van Cu pho craft village – the cradle of pho making – and enriching Vietnamese culinary culture.
