Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the International Organizations in Vienna, Mr. Mikhail Ulyanov, called on the US and the E3 group (France, Germany and the UK) to return to the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Speaking at the meeting of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Mr. Ulyanov emphasized that Russia calls on the US and E3, instead of hindering the interaction between Iran and the IAEA, to focus their efforts on restoring the JCPOA, which will create favorable conditions for Tehran to comply with the agreement.

Iran signed the JCPOA with several countries in July 2015, under which Tehran limited its nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of sanctions.

However, the US withdrew from the agreement in May 2018 and re-imposed unilateral sanctions on Iran, forcing Tehran to abandon some of its commitments in the JCPOA.

The countries launched the revival of the agreement in April 2021 in Vienna, Austria. Although the parties have conducted several rounds of negotiations, no significant breakthrough has been achieved since the last round of negotiations ended in August 2022.
