Mr. Duong Quoc Thanh's 1-hectare orange orchard in Hamlet 1, Quang Tho Commune, Vu Quang District ( Ha Tinh Province) is cultivated according to organic standards. Thanks to adhering to proper technical procedures, all the orange trees are laden with fruit, with an estimated harvest of over 10 tons by the end of the season.
In early 2022, encouraged by local authorities, Mr. Duong Quoc Thanh's family in Hamlet 1 (Quang Tho Commune) converted 1 hectare of their Xa Doai orange orchard to organic farming. After nearly two years of application, in early November 2023, the family's orange orchard received organic certification from Vinacontrol Inspection Company Limited in Ho Chi Minh City. This is considered a "passport" that helps the family expand their market and increase economic value.
Mr. Duong Quoc Thanh said: "When we started producing organic oranges, my family completely changed our traditional farming practices. Instead of using pesticides and chemical fertilizers as before, we used well-rotted manure with microbial preparations to fertilize the trees. This added organic matter and increased humus, helping to improve and increase soil fertility..."
According to Mr. Thanh, the biggest benefit of switching to organic farming is improved health. As someone directly involved in production, he is not exposed to chemicals and feels healthier. He is delighted that customers can use high-quality products that are good for their health.
In particular, organic farming methods help plants grow strong, resistant to pests and diseases, and prevent premature degradation compared to traditional farming methods. Furthermore, it significantly enhances the quality and value of the product.
"Previously, during harvest season, our family could only sell oranges for 20,000 VND/kg, but now the price has increased to 30,000-35,000 VND/kg, and it will increase even further by the end of the season. In addition, the orange yield is also outstanding; this season, our family estimates a harvest of over 10 tons, 3 tons more than in previous years, so we are very excited and confident in continuing with the organic farming process," Mr. Thanh shared.
Mrs. Tran Thi Yen (wife of Mr. Duong Quoc Thanh) is delighted standing beside the orange trees laden with fruit.
Organic farming is a sustainable production method that brings many benefits to Mr. Duong Quoc Thanh's family.
The glistening, dew-covered oranges left visitors in awe.
Mr. Thanh shared: "Since the beginning of the season, my family has sold over 7 tons of oranges, earning more than 200 million VND. About 3 tons have already been ordered by regular customers for Tet (Lunar New Year), when the price will be higher. Besides selling, my family also welcomes groups of visitors to tour and experience harvesting oranges in the orchard, and local households to learn about organic orange farming."
With determination, perseverance, and patience in overcoming difficulties, Mr. and Mrs. Duong Quoc Thanh have pioneered changes and spread farming methods towards sustainable agricultural production in the area.
Mr. Duong Quoc Thanh is an active and dynamic farmer, a pioneer in transforming traditional production methods towards sustainable organic farming. The success of his model has helped many farmers change their mindset and choose environmentally friendly organic farming. In the future, we will continue to encourage farmers to visit and learn from his experience to gradually expand the area of organic orange cultivation. This will not only contribute to increasing farmers' income but also elevate the brand of Vu Quang oranges in the market.
