At the start of the competition, the Vietnamese swimming team had a relatively slow pace, with Nguyen Kha Nhi finishing in the top 7 in the 200m freestyle and Luong Jérémie Loïc Nino finishing in the top 5 in the 50m freestyle.

The Vietnamese swimming team began to show promise after "Frog Prince" Pham Thanh Bao won a gold medal in the 100m breaststroke. Following closely behind, young female swimmer Vo Thi My Tien finished third in the 200m individual medley with a time of 2 minutes 16.66 seconds. She put in a strong effort to compete against formidable opponents from Singapore (2 minutes 13.42 seconds) and Thailand (2 minutes 16.14 seconds).
