What fruits should people with thyroid disease limit eating?

VnExpressVnExpress13/05/2023

I have had diabetes for 3 years. Last week, I went for a general health check and found out I have thyroid disease.

I also eat a balanced diet and monitor my health according to the instructions of my local doctor. The doctor advised me to eat fruits and vegetables to supplement nutrients that are good for my health. However, the doctor asked me if people with thyroid disease should limit any fruits to avoid affecting their health? (Ngoc Nu, Soc Trang )

In addition to fruits that are good for the thyroid, patients should also limit or eat in moderation fruits with high sugar content (durian, longan, lychee, jackfruit, mango, banana...). Because when consuming too much sugar or sweeteners, the body cannot convert all the sugar into energy. The consequence is that residual sugar in the blood lasts for a long time, leading to hyperglycemia, impaired glucose tolerance, diabetes, weight gain and greatly affecting the function of the thyroid gland.

For example, people with thyroid disease should limit mangoes because they are high in sugar. 100 grams of mango contains about 14 grams of sugar, so eating a lot of mangoes can easily lead to high blood sugar levels. Lychee also contains a lot of sugar, so it can easily increase blood sugar levels, affecting people with diabetes.

Durian contains high levels of sugar and starch, so eating too much will increase blood sugar levels. In cancer patients, the thyroid gland has impaired function, so it cannot convert sugar into energy for the body, causing weight gain and obesity... Therefore, patients should also limit durian to avoid dangerous health complications.
