People can experience "Smart Airport" at Noi Bai International Terminal T2

From December 19, passengers can check in and check in their luggage at Noi Bai T2 Passenger Terminal through a series of automatic check-in and luggage counters. A smart airport exists right at the gateway to Hanoi Capital.

After more than 18 months of urgent construction (starting from May 19, 2024), the T2 Passenger Terminal Expansion Project is expected to be officially inaugurated and put into operation from December 19, 2025. This is a key project to help relieve infrastructure pressure, increasing the design capacity from 10 million to 15 million passengers/year.

The project is being implemented in the context of the existing Terminal T2 at Noi Bai International Airport being under pressure from overload. With an initial design capacity of 10 million passengers/year, in the first 11 months of 2025 alone, the terminal has served nearly 13 million passengers, exceeding the design capacity. The high frequency of international flights poses a big challenge for relevant units in terms of both construction and operation to ensure security, safety and service quality.

The completed project helps increase the total floor area from 139,216 m² to 200,164 m². Operational capacity is greatly enhanced. Specifically, the check-in counters are increased from 4 islands to 6 islands; helping to increase from 96 existing check-in counters to 144 counters, including 24 automatic baggage drop counters (Self Bag Drop counters). Adding 24 new check-in kiosks helps guests check in by themselves without having to queue at the counter.

In particular, the security check gates were increased from 2 areas to 3 passenger screening security check areas (A, B, C). The number of gates increased from 17 to 30, numbered progressively from the central area to the East and West wings. 15 telescopic bridges were also added (including 11 code C and 4 code E), helping most passengers to move conveniently directly to the plane regardless of weather conditions, meeting wide-body aircraft models. Along with that, the baggage claim conveyor system was increased from 6 to 8 conveyors, shortening the waiting time for immigration.

A special highlight is the T2 Terminal Expansion Project, marking a strong transformation of Noi Bai International Airport in digitizing aviation processes. For the first time, an ecosystem of automated devices is deployed synchronously, empowering passengers and optimizing operational capacity.

Accordingly, the procedure flow (Self-service) will be automated. In the departure hall area, the Port has installed a system of 24 Check-in Kiosks and 24 Self Bag Drop counters. Putting into operation a large number of these devices helps passengers to be completely proactive in choosing seats, printing boarding passes and checking luggage without depending on traditional check-in counters, improving the passenger experience by not having to queue at the counter.

Along with that is smart security screening (Smart Security). This is considered a technological highlight in the security control system with 6 new generation 3D screening machines and 3 most modern body scanners (Body Scanner) currently meeting TSA standards. 3D luggage scanner: Integrating automatic tray return technology and multi-dimensional 3D images, allowing accurate screening without removing laptops or liquids, helping to increase throughput capacity and shorten waiting time. Or the body scanner (Body Scanner) is also equipped by the airport. Accordingly, the unit will use absolutely safe millimeter wave technology (no ionizing radiation, safe for pregnant women and people using pacemakers). The device scans quickly in a few seconds, accurately detects metal/non-metal objects and ensures maximum privacy through neutral Avatar display images.

Not stopping there, the airport is also equipped with an automatic exit lane (Autogate). Along with the above equipment, an automatic immigration system (Autogate) is also installed at the Border Police area and the Veripax boarding pass control area. The combination of Autogate and biometric devices helps the immigration and security check process to take place quickly, minimizing the waiting time in line.
