Fourteen years ago, the people of the Lam Son sugarcane growing region and Lam Son Sugar Corporation (Lasuco) had the honor of welcoming National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong on a visit. His attention and insightful guidance on the model of linking workers, farmers, and intellectuals in sugarcane production and business at that time became a guiding principle and a great source of encouragement for the people of the localities and Lasuco to cooperate in revitalizing sugarcane and sugar production, enriching their families and society.

Years have passed, but the images and mementos from the day National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong visited Lasuco are still carefully preserved by Labor Hero Le Van Tam - the company's "captain".

Now 87 years old, Labor Hero Le Van Tam still vividly remembers his meeting with the Chairman of the National Assembly more than 14 years ago. It was January 9, 2010, just before the Lunar New Year of the Tiger, when a Central Committee delegation led by the Chairman of the National Assembly visited to learn about and assess the production situation of the people in the Lam Son sugarcane growing region and the Lam Son Sugar Company, in preparation for the documents to be presented at the 11th National Party Congress. His deepest impression of Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong was his simple, approachable, open, and affectionate style, treating everyone like family.

"As someone deeply connected to the grassroots, valuing the people, and closely associated with the people, National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong told me: 'Take me to visit the people in the Lam Son sugarcane growing area.' After I introduced him to the large-scale sugarcane farming model between Lasuco and the people of Cam Chau commune (Cam Thuy district), the National Assembly Chairman agreed to visit Cam Chau. Upon arrival, under the dry winter weather, the National Assembly Chairman went towards the sugarcane fields of Oi village to meet and inquire about the sugarcane farming work of each household and the tractor drivers who were preparing the land. Shaking hands with each person, the National Assembly Chairman asked: 'Is your income from sugarcane farming secure? Are there any difficulties in expanding the sugarcane farming area to a large-scale model field?' The simple, warm inquiries from the head of the highest state power agency dispelled the hardships of the sugarcane farmers; everyone felt warm, gathered together, and laughed happily as if welcoming family members home." - Labor Hero Le Van Tam Recalling the past.

Accompanying National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong that day was the Chairman of the People's Committee of Cam Chau commune, Ha Van Lap. He replied: “Sir, in implementing the land consolidation policy, the commune Party committee and government have coordinated with Lam Son Sugar Corporation to cooperate with local farmers in building a model of intensive sugarcane cultivation. The conversion of low-yield agricultural land to sugarcane cultivation has been carried out by farmers in the commune for many seasons, yielding high productivity, output, and economic efficiency. In peak years, Cam Chau commune had about 200 hectares of sugarcane, with a yield of nearly 80 tons/ha. This large-scale, mechanized intensive sugarcane field is the first of its kind implemented by farmers in the commune. The field covers nearly 100 hectares along the Ho Chi Minh Highway. This is an area previously used for one-crop rice cultivation that was not guaranteed to yield a harvest.”

Hearing the report on the effectiveness of sugarcane cultivation in Cam Chau, the Chairman of the National Assembly was very pleased. He also expressed his hope that the people of all ethnic groups in the commune would always remain united, supportive of each other in developing production and building a prosperous and happy life, and continue to cooperate with Lam Son Sugar Company to exploit the advantages of the land, expand sugarcane cultivation, create more jobs, increase income, and escape poverty. Although Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong's stay in Cam Chau was brief, the local officials and people of all ethnic groups present that day still cherish the image of the head of the highest state power agency – simple, approachable, and full of warmth and affection.

Leaving Cam Chau, the Chairman of the National Assembly and the delegation returned to visit the Lam Son Sugar Factory. “That day, the Chairman of the National Assembly proactively came to shake hands, chat, inquire about the living conditions and work of each employee and took commemorative photos with everyone. I was fortunate enough to have Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong hold my hand and take a private photo with me. The kind eyes and gentle smile of the Chairman of the National Assembly from over 14 years ago still feel like yesterday to me,” Mr. Le Van Tam recalled emotionally.

While leading the National Assembly Chairman on a tour of the factory's production line, Mr. Le Van Tam took the opportunity to report on the company's situation. Lam Son Sugar Company is a state-owned enterprise under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, established in the early 1980s. Over more than 20 years of development, the company had at one point been on the verge of bankruptcy. In 1999, Lam Son Sugar Company transformed into Lam Son Sugar Cane Joint Stock Company. This was the first enterprise nationwide where farmers could purchase shares in the factory and enjoy the same benefits as workers. The sugar cane raw material area was expanded, and the cooperation between industry, agriculture, and intellectuals continued to develop, contributing to the industrialization and modernization of agriculture and rural areas. The company is the only unit in the Vietnamese sugar cane industry that effectively implements contracts for advance investment and guaranteed product purchase with farmers in the raw material area. This result is the culmination of a collaborative relationship between industry, agriculture, and intellectuals, and the tireless efforts and creativity of the company's staff and workers, as well as sugarcane farmers in the region.

Based on his understanding of the situation of sugarcane farmers and the factory's operations, National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong highly appreciated the efforts and results that Lasuco has achieved. The National Assembly Chairman said: “In implementing the Party's guidelines and policies, the company has linked industry with agriculture, developed the worker-peasant alliance, stayed close to the people, relied on the people, and helped farmers solve the problems of employment and income, enabling them to prosper and build the Lam Son sugarcane growing area on an increasingly larger scale,” Mr. Tam shared.

Before all the company's officials and workers, National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Phu Trong expressed his wish that Lam Son Sugar Corporation would continue to research, summarize, and propose to the province and the central government on the issue of developing the worker-peasant alliance in the socialist-oriented market economy. In particular, he emphasized the relationship regarding the distribution of benefits between sugarcane farmers, factories, and the State. The cooperative model between Lasuco and farmers in the Lam Son sugarcane region is a vivid example of the close link between businesses and farmers. Businesses and farmers need to rely on each other and be closely linked; this is both the goal and the driving force for sustainable production and business development.

The insightful and clear theoretical and practical guidance on the model of linking industry, agriculture, and intellectuals in sugar cane production and business, along with the dedication and aspirations of the head of the highest state power agency, is the direction for Lasuco's sustainable and strong development with many products bearing the Thanh Hoa brand.

Following the sound directives of the National Assembly Chairman, Lasuco's staff and workers have continuously worked and innovated to build and sustainably develop the sugarcane raw material area. The focus has been on implementing comprehensive solutions in the "Renewing Sugarcane and Lam Son Sugar" program, concentrating on large-scale farming, mechanization, and the application of high technology. From sugarcane, industrial products bearing the brand of Thanh Hoa province have been created. Simultaneously, jobs have been created, incomes have increased, and many households in the sugarcane raw material area have risen out of poverty, enriching their families and society.

In recent years, Lasuco has developed high-tech agricultural products such as premium vegetables, flowers, and fruits, organic rice production, and clay-based building materials. In addition, Lasuco has expanded into other business sectors including the alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverage industry; agricultural and forestry product processing; animal feed; transportation and mechanical services; supply of raw materials, production and breeding of plants and animals; product consumption and processing of agricultural and food products; commercial, hotel, and catering businesses; import and export of agricultural and forestry products and machinery, equipment, materials, and spare parts for production and business; research and development in agricultural and industrial science; clean water for production and daily life; repair and fabrication services for machinery and equipment; and agricultural and forestry land preparation services.

Respecting, admiring, and following the example of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, the staff and employees of Lam Son Sugar Corporation (LASUCO) continue to uphold the core value of "always thinking of new things and daring to change," striving to build and develop LASUCO into a leading Vietnamese enterprise applying high technology in the development of clean, natural products with high nutritional content, meeting the expectations of global consumers.
