At a regular press briefing on September 15, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated that Beijing urged Washington to cease military contact and the arming of Taiwan, or face a "firm and strong response" from China.
Ms. Mao Ning asserted: "Lockheed Martin Corporation in St. Louis, Missouri, was directly involved in the US arms sale to Taiwan (China) - announced on August 24th."
Meanwhile, the aerospace and defense corporation Northrop Grumman has also repeatedly sold American weapons to the island.
"In accordance with the People's Republic of China's Law on Countering Foreign Sanctions, China has decided to impose sanctions on the two aforementioned US defense companies," the spokesperson said.
In August of this year, the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency announced the sale of $500 million worth of F-16 fighter jets manufactured by Lockheed Martin to Taiwan (China). Prior to that, in late 2022, the agency also announced the supply of anti-tank mine deployment systems from Northrup Grumman.
In addition to the above agreements, Washington announced last month that it would provide Taiwan (China) with $80 million to purchase American weapons.
According to the U.S. Congress , the aid package could help the island purchase and upgrade armored vehicles, artillery systems, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and anti-UAV equipment, communications equipment and soldiers' personal gear, as well as necessary training.
