In order to prepare a sufficient supply of flowers to meet the increased demand during the upcoming Tet holiday, these days, flower growers in Dong Giang ward, especially in An Lac flower village (Dong Ha City), are busy in their gardens, caring for their plants, protecting them from the cold, pruning branches, and trimming buds to produce beautiful potted flowers.

This year, the An Lac Flower Cooperative in Dong Giang ward has grown 50,000 potted flowers for Tet (Lunar New Year), of which 20,000 seedlings of various types have already been sold. The remaining 30,000 potted flowers will serve the Tet market within the province, including varieties such as chrysanthemums, marigolds, gerberas, peonies, petunias, and primroses. These flowers are currently being carefully tended to in preparation for market release around December 15th (lunar calendar).
This year, the weather has been quite favorable, so the flowers are thriving. Besides the potted chrysanthemums, the main flower of An Lac flower village, the pompom chrysanthemum is now also being widely cultivated and prioritized by flower growers. Currently, the Tet flowers in Dong Giang ward are developing well, and flower growers are focusing on securing the plants with bamboo sticks in preparation for pruning and trimming buds.
Mr. Trinh Duc Quang, residing in Ward 1, said that to prepare for this year's Tet holiday, his family is growing approximately 4,000 pots of various flowers. This includes 400 pots of large chrysanthemums, with the remainder being short-lived flowers and other hanging flower varieties. The weather in Quang Tri has been more favorable than in previous years, resulting in better flower growth. Currently, Mr. Quang's family is focusing on pruning buds and trimming branches to ensure the flowers bloom in time for Tet, ready to serve the public.
“This is the final stage in the flower's growth cycle, which determines the quality of the flowers, so we are taking very careful care to avoid any mistakes. The current weather is relatively favorable, the plants are growing well and are healthy, so we are confident that they will produce a beautiful, fresh batch of flowers. We also hope for a successful flower season this year so that we can have a prosperous Tet holiday,” said Mr. Quang.
Mr. Le Dien Kim, residing in Ward 1, is also a household that has been involved in the traditional flower cultivation profession in the area for decades. While meticulously inserting bamboo stakes to secure each chrysanthemum plant, Mr. Kim informed that this year his family is growing about 2,500 pots of various flowers, including 400 pots of traditional chrysanthemums and the rest being hanging flowers for Tet (Lunar New Year). Currently, the weather is rainy and cold, and like many other households, Mr. Kim has proactively taken measures to keep the flower garden warm by using electric lights, covering the roots with straw to keep them warm, and covering the garden with plastic sheeting and tarpaulin.
Mr. Kim said that in previous years' Tet flower harvests, after deducting expenses, his family earned about 70 million VND. “Over the years, from the city to the ward level, there has been support in providing flower seeds and training for flower growers. Thanks to this, households have better conditions to maintain and develop the flower growing profession. We expect this year's Tet flower harvest to be more successful and bring better income,” Mr. Kim shared.
Dong Giang Ward has a long-standing tradition of flower cultivation and is the largest supplier of fresh flowers in Quang Tri province, with a market not only within the province but also in many neighboring provinces. In particular, flower cultivation in An Lac village has become the main occupation for the local people to develop economically . With increasing urbanization, the flower village has created jobs for many local laborers who no longer have land to cultivate. Simultaneously, it has led to the development of many other related industries such as: supplying materials, fertilizers, paint, pot making, transportation, etc.
Furthermore, income from this profession has contributed to the prosperity of many households. In the current process of urbanization, creating land for preserving the flower cultivation profession will create green spaces linked to the sustainable development of Dong Ha City. In recent years, the city has invested in infrastructure to support the production of potted chrysanthemums and other types of flowers. Along with increasingly improved infrastructure and solid experience and techniques, this has helped flower growers in An Lac village in particular, and Dong Giang ward in general, achieve successful Tet flower seasons.
The 2025 Spring Flower Fair will soon be relocated from Fidel Park to an open plot of land adjacent to Hoang Dieu Street. This new location is on the north bank of the Hieu River, within the administrative boundaries of Dong Thanh and Dong Giang wards, covering an area of approximately 11,025 square meters. Flower growers in Dong Giang ward and An Lac village are extremely happy and excited about the new venue for the spring flower fair.
According to Hoang Huu Khiem, head of the An Lac Flower Cooperative, the location for the 2025 Spring Flower Festival is adjacent to Hoang Dieu Street and close to National Highway 1, with a road width of up to 25 meters, making it very convenient for transporting flowers and ornamental plants for display. Furthermore, transport vehicles do not have to enter restricted areas, making loading and unloading easier for vendors. This street also maintains daily environmental hygiene, ensuring the road and sidewalks are always clean.
Mr. Khiem said: "Moving the spring flower festival to this new location, with reasonable and affordable stall rental prices, has made flower growers very happy and motivated to maintain and develop their profession. Not only that, Tet flowers will be sold better in neighboring areas such as Cam Lo and Gio Linh."
Mr. Khiem added that moving the spring flower fair to a location adjacent to Hoang Dieu Street and near National Highway 1 will create a beautiful scenic spot along the Hieu River for people to come and enjoy themselves. In the long term, flower growers in Dong Giang ward in general, and An Lac flower village in particular, will focus on investing in building a brand for their traditional flower village, with its distinctive cultural features along the Hieu River, to contribute to promoting agricultural development in suburban areas and attracting tourists to develop tourism.
