International public opinion
Reuters quoted former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on November 6 as saying that Republican candidate Donald Trump's victory in the US election could be bad news for Ukraine, but it remains unclear to what extent Trump might cut Washington's funding for the conflict.
On Telegram , Medvedev – currently the Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council – suggested that the Ukrainian government is among the groups that Trump might not want to spend too much money on.
Meanwhile, AFP quoted Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning as emphasizing: "We will continue to approach and handle China-US relations based on the principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence, and mutually beneficial cooperation."
On the same day, France, a European ally of the US, called on the continent to be prepared to take responsibility for its own destiny if Donald Trump wins the US presidential election.
French government spokesman Maud Bregeon stated: “We must not ask what the US will do, but what Europe is capable of doing. In some crucial areas such as defense, industrial recovery, and decarbonization, we must take responsibility for our own destiny.”
Another U.S. ally, Japan, affirmed its commitment to building trust and close cooperation with the new U.S. administration to strengthen the bilateral security alliance.
Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Hayashi Yoshimasa emphasized that this alliance is "the cornerstone of Japan's foreign and security policies. We will maintain close contact with the next U.S. administration to further enhance the alliance's deterrence and response capabilities."
According to Hayashi, Tokyo has been closely monitoring the US election and plans to arrange a meeting between the leaders of the two countries soon, as both sides are expanding security cooperation with partners such as South Korea and Australia to address challenges.
