Cheese is not only delicious but can also work wonders for your health. Scientists have recently discovered a unique effect of cheese.
A study recently published in the medical journal Sleep Medicine has found a way to "treat" a dangerous nighttime ailment using cheese.
Dr. Daniel Barone, a sleep specialist at Weill Cornell Medicine (USA), explains: Sleep apnea is extremely common; it's a condition where a person repeatedly stops breathing during the night. Frequent occurrences of this condition lead to sleep deprivation. Disrupted sleep increases blood pressure and heart rate. Over time, this can lead to heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and weight gain.
Eating cheese helps reduce the risk of sleep apnea by 28%.
To examine the relationship between cheese consumption and the risk of sleep apnea, researchers analyzed data from 400,000 participants from the UK Biobank and the Finnish FinnGen Biobank.
According to the health website Verywell Health, eating cheese has been found to reduce the risk of sleep apnea by 28%.
The research team also examined 44 biomarkers associated with the risk of sleep apnea. The results identified that cheese may directly impact six of these factors, including diastolic blood pressure.
Researchers say that essential nutrients in cheese may have a positive impact on some of the bodily markers associated with sleep apnea.
Frequent sleep apnea leads to sleep deprivation. Disrupted sleep increases blood pressure and heart rate. Over time, this can lead to heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and weight gain.
Dr. Daniella Marchetti, a clinical psychologist specializing in behavioral sleep medicine, working in the U.S., says previous studies have shown that cheese consumption also helps lower high blood pressure, a known risk factor for nighttime sleep apnea. Other small studies have also shown that cheese consumption helps increase testosterone levels, a potential preventative measure for sleep apnea.
Cheese should be consumed in moderation.
These findings highlight the unique nutritional properties of cheese, said Dr. Marchetti. Cheese can be a rich source of essential nutrients, including high-quality protein, calcium, fatty acids, and other vitamins that support overall health.
But Dr. Barone noted that the strange thing is that cheese is high in calories—which often leads to weight gain, and being overweight is a risk factor for sleep apnea.
Therefore, for the best results in treating sleep apnea, Dr. Barone recommends consuming cheese in moderation, according to Verywell Health.
Dr. Barone also emphasized the need for further research.
