The fighter jet crashed in Kayah state in eastern Myanmar, near the border with Thailand, on November 11, during fighting between the army and the Karenni National Defense Forces (KNDF) rebel group.
The KNDF stated on its Facebook page that they shot down the fighter jet on November 11 using heavy machine guns and that KNDF members were searching for the pilots.
Meanwhile, Myanmar's military junta spokesman Zaw Min Tun told state-run MRTV that the plane crashed due to a technical malfunction, and the pilots parachuted to safety and have made contact with the military.
The fighter jet crash occurred while the Myanmar military was engaged in fighting with ethnic armed groups on multiple fronts.
Images from a video on social media on November 9th show a burning house in a military outpost occupied by an opposition group in Myanmar.
In particular, conflict in Shan State in northern Myanmar, bordering China, has displaced at least 50,000 people, cut off trade routes, and resulted in the seizure of several towns since an anti-government offensive launched last month by three rebel groups. The rebel alliance claims to have captured more than 100 military outposts.
Given this situation, Myanmar's military-backed President Myint Swe warned on November 8 that Myanmar risks being divided if the military fails to prevent a mass attack by ethnic armed groups, according to AFP.
