Quynh Phu: People 'build sand walls' to withstand storms and sea waves

Facing the strong winds of storm No. 5, people living along the sea dike in Quynh Phu commune have crisscrossed their houses with sandbags to limit the high tide.

On August 25, in the old Quynh Long commune area - now Quynh Phu commune, it was seen that most households living along the coast used sandbags to block the front gates and doors of their houses, creating a wave-blocking wall.

Mr. Nguyen Van Tu, a local resident, said: “My family of 5, including the elderly and children, has been evacuated to Quynh Long Kindergarten to ensure safety. The two adults stayed behind to coordinate with the militia and police to pack sandbags to block the house and prevent seawater from flooding in. The house is only about 30 meters from the sea, so every time there is a big storm, the high tide often overflows the dike, which is very dangerous.”

A representative of the People's Committee of Quynh Phu commune informed that the whole commune has more than 12 km of sea dyke with over 300 households living along the route. To ensure the safety of people's lives and property, before the storm hit, the commune's functional forces including militia, police, military and other organizations organized to support people in packing sandbags, blocking houses, and trimming surrounding trees.

Currently, the functional forces of Quynh Phu commune are still on duty at the grassroots level, coordinating with local people to proactively respond and minimize damage caused by storm No. 5.
