Sources indicate that President-elect Donald Trump's team is compiling a detailed list of high-ranking officials who will be laid off at the Pentagon.
Reuters reported on November 14, citing sources familiar with the matter, that members of President-elect Donald Trump's transition team are compiling a list of officials to be laid off, in an unprecedented reshuffle at the U.S. Department of Defense (Pentagon).
Accordingly, the plan is in its early stages following Trump's victory in the November 5th election and may change as the Trump administration is formed. One source questioned the feasibility of these layoffs.
TV host becomes Trump's Secretary of Defense.
It remains unclear whether Trump would approve of the plan, despite his previous strong criticism of many defense leaders who have criticized him. Trump also stated during his campaign that he would fire those responsible for the troubled 2021 withdrawal from Afghanistan.
Trump's campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The Pentagon is expected to see significant personnel changes under President Trump's upcoming term.
According to the sources, the upcoming administration may focus on dismissing military officers allegedly linked to Mark Milley, the former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
In his book War, published last month, author Bob Woodward quotes Milley's scathing criticism of Trump. Trump's allies have targeted Milley, accusing him of disloyalty to the former president.
"Every individual promoted and appointed by Mr. Milley will be leaving. There is a very detailed list of everyone connected to Mr. Milley. And they will all be leaving," according to a source.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff comprises the highest-ranking officers in the U.S. military, including the heads of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, National Guard, and Space Force.
The revelation of plans to fire senior leaders of the U.S. armed forces comes a day after Trump chose Pete Hegseth as Secretary of Defense. Veteran Hegseth is a Fox News anchor and has indicated a willingness to clean up the Pentagon.
Some current and former U.S. officials believe that such a major personnel reshuffle is unlikely, arguing that it would be unnecessary and disruptive at a time when the world is witnessing wars in Ukraine and the Middle East.
