On September 22nd, Tri An Hydropower Company announced that it would release floodwaters through the spillway downstream, as the average water flow from upstream into the reservoir was 2,000 m³/s, reaching an elevation of 60.5m (the dam's safe elevation is 62m).
Accordingly, at 6:00 AM on September 22nd, the upstream water level of the reservoir reached 60.4m (the dam's safety level is 62m), the downstream water level after the power plant was 4.3m, and the water flow through the power generation turbines was 815 m³/s, while the water inflow into the reservoir reached nearly 2,000 m³/s.
At the Ta Lai station (upstream of the Dong Nai River), the water level is rising very rapidly, currently between alarm level 2 (112.5m) and alarm level 3 (113m), while at the Bien Hoa station (downstream of the Dong Nai River), the peak tide level is high, close to alarm level 2 (2m).
The Tri An Hydropower Plant announced flood relief measures for the downstream area at 10:00 AM on September 23rd, based on two scenarios: If the water level at the Bien Hoa station is below 1.8m (alert level 1), the Tri An Hydropower Plant will release water through the spillway at a flow rate of 150-300 m³/s, with a total downstream discharge of 1,000-1,150 m³/s. If the water level at the Bien Hoa station exceeds alert level 1, the Tri An Hydropower Plant will release floodwater through the spillway at a flow rate of 0-150 m³/s, with a total downstream discharge of 850-1,000 m³/s.
Low-lying areas along the La Ngà River in Tân Phú and Định Quán districts (Đồng Nai province); and Tánh Linh and Đức Linh districts ( Bình Thuận province) are at risk of flooding. In addition, many low-lying areas downstream of the Đồng Nai River, such as Long Thành, Nhơn Trạch, and Vĩnh Cửu districts (Đồng Nai province) and Thủ Đức City, Ho Chi Minh City, are also at risk of flooding.
The Tri An hydroelectric power plant is the largest in Southern Vietnam, contributing significantly to the national power grid, regulating water for production and daily life for millions of families, and participating in flood control for downstream areas and salinity control.
