Prolonged heavy rains caused the water level of Phuoc Giang River to rise and caused serious erosion along both banks of the river. Many sections were deeply eroded, eating into the concrete road. The most dangerous section was from Cay Sanh - Ben Loi bridge through An Son village, Phuoc Giang commune, where the erosion stretched for about 1,000m; 500m alone was eroded close to the edge of the road, creating a cavity inside the road, directly threatening people's travel.

The road running along the riverbank through An Son village is the only route along the river, with hundreds of students and residents passing by every day. Residents fear that with just a few more rains, the entire road could collapse into the river if there is no sustainable reinforcement solution.

To ensure safety on the riverside route, local authorities have put up ropes and warning signs to warn people when passing through this area.

Mr. Dang Tam's house (An Son village, Phuoc Giang commune) is located next to the concrete road, just need to cross the road to reach the river's edge. Mr. Tam is very worried because another landslide could directly threaten his house.

To prevent further landslides from encroaching on the concrete road and threatening houses, for the past week, Mr. Tam has been using bamboo to drive stakes, build embankments, and then dump soil and rocks down the riverbank to temporarily reinforce it. He said: “Not only my family, but about 150 households along the riverbank are also very worried, because now the distance from the edge of the concrete road to the house is only about 1.5m. If this road collapses, people's houses are at risk of being pulled down into the river.”

Similar to Mr. Tam, many households in dangerous landslide areas also have to temporarily build embankments at vulnerable points right in front of their houses.

Mr. Truong Quang Sinh (An Son village) said: "This situation directly threatens the travel of about 150 households. Currently, landslides have caused the loss of production land and threatened the homes of more than 60 households. People hope that authorities will soon have solutions to support and reinforce the riverbank to ensure safety and stabilize their lives."

Mr. Tran Van Thien, Vice Chairman of Phuoc Giang Commune People's Committee, said: "The Phuoc Giang riverbank from Cay Sanh bridge to An Son village is eroding very seriously. If not promptly repaired, the upcoming rain and flood could completely destroy the traffic route. At that time, the cost of treatment will increase greatly, and people's houses and production land are at risk of being washed away."

Not only in An Son village, landslides are occurring seriously in many sections along the Phuoc Giang river bank and branches of Phuoc Giang river such as the section from Vong bridge (Long Ban Bac village) with a landslide of about 500m; the embankment area of Dong Gia residential area (Tinh Phu Bac village) with a landslide of 700m; the section through Kim Thanh Thuong village with a landslide of 1,000m and the Kim Thanh river with a landslide of 700m, causing loss of productive land, threatening houses and many landslides close to traffic routes.

Phuoc Giang Commune People's Committee has reported and proposed Quang Ngai Provincial People's Committee to support the construction of an embankment with a total length of 1,105m in the vulnerable area with an estimated total cost of 77 billion VND, to ensure the safety of the concrete road, protect houses and land for hundreds of households along the river.
