On the afternoon of October 5th, Colonel Nguyen The Vinh, Commander of the Gia Lai Provincial Military Command, confirmed that a fishing vessel from the province had been sunk by a foreign cargo ship at sea. According to the Gia Lai Provincial Military Command's report, the vessel involved in the accident was a South Korean-flagged oil tanker with IMO number 009448853.
According to information from the Gia Lai Provincial Military Command, on the morning of October 5, this agency received a report from Cat Khanh Border Guard Station about the fishing boat BD-83019 being sunk at sea.
Specifically, this fishing vessel is owned and captained by Mr. Nguyen Tran Ut (50 years old, residing in An Quang Tay village, De Gi commune, Gia Lai province).
On the afternoon of October 4th, this 800CV fishing vessel departed from the Ca Na Border Guard Control Station in Khanh Hoa province with 11 crew members to go out to sea to fish using seine nets.
At 10:30 PM on the same day, Mr. Ut's fishing boat was rammed and sunk by a South Korean oil tanker while it was approximately 17 nautical miles southeast of the Ca Na estuary.
After the incident, the cargo ship continued its journey without organizing a search and rescue. Authorities believe that due to the darkness and limited visibility, the oil tanker did not detect the accident.
After the accident, the fishing boat sent out an emergency distress signal before sinking completely. Fortunately, a fishing boat from Gia Lai province operating nearby, captained by Nguyen Van Tao (36 years old, residing in Cat Tien commune), approached and rescued 10 crew members.
The person who unfortunately went missing in the accident was the captain and owner of the vessel, Nguyen Tran Ut. Authorities believe that Mr. Ut was likely trapped in the ship's cabin. Currently, the rescued crew members are being brought to Ca Na fishing port in Khanh Hoa province.
Gia Lai provincial authorities requested the Navy Command, Coast Guard and Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center of Regions II and IV to mobilize means to organize search and rescue for Captain Ut; proposed the Provincial People's Committee to notify and discuss with the Maritime Administration to direct the situation of the Korean oil tanker to coordinate the solution.
A fishing boat with eight fishermen from Gia Lai has been missing for nine days.
After 9 days of losing contact, fishing boat BD-97258 with 8 fishermen, owned and captained by Mr. Huynh Van Son (44 years old), resident of Kim Giao Thien residential group, Hoai Nhon Dong ward, is still missing.
As reported, this ship lost contact since the night of September 27 and has not been found yet, although search forces have applied many search and rescue methods.
This vessel, engaged in both purse seine fishing and tuna longline fishing, departed on September 12th from the Ca Na Border Guard Station in Khanh Hoa province. Besides Captain Son, the vessel also carried seven other crew members from Gia Lai, Lam Dong, and Hai Phong provinces.
The fishing boat’s last position before losing connection at 8:13 p.m. on September 27 was 147 nautical miles from Quy Nhon Ward, Gia Lai. Before losing connection, the boat was moving at 2 nautical miles/hour, about 154 nautical miles northeast of the path of storm No. 10.
