Today, July 17, is the second day of the 2019 International Mathematical Olympiad in the UK. On his personal page, Associate Professor Le Anh Vinh, Deputy Director of the Vietnam Institute of Educational Sciences, head of the Vietnamese national team participating in the exam, shared: “While doing the IMO exam, I heard that Mr. Tuy passed away. I am from the next generation, I have never met him, so I don’t know what to say. I would like to boldly include his name in the translation of this year’s IMO exam as a stick of incense from a junior, to show gratitude to one of the people who laid the foundation for the specialized mathematics system and the IMO movement in Vietnam. I respectfully bid farewell to you, teacher…”.

Speaking to Thanh Nien , Associate Professor Le Anh Vinh explained: “Before each exam, the host country will select 28 problems, the heads of delegations will vote to select 6 problems, covering all 4 subjects: algebra, geometry, combinatorics, and arithmetic. After that, the heads of delegations will agree on the answers and grading scale, and then translate them into their own language for students to do. According to convention, when translating, the heads of delegations will stick to English, however, the translator is allowed to change the names of the people mentioned in the questions to suit the culture of each country.”
Associate Professor Le Anh Vinh also informed that after 2 days of testing, the results of the Vietnamese team's students were quite positive. Interestingly, in problem 5, where the character's name in the problem was Harry, Associate Professor Le Anh Vinh changed it to "teacher Tuy", all the students of the Vietnamese team were able to do it.
Associate Professor Le Anh Vinh said: “I think that among the team members, many of you have heard of Professor Hoang Tuy. But tonight, when we meet you, the topic of Professor Hoang Tuy will certainly be brought up for discussion. The teachers in the group will talk in more detail so that you can realize the stature and role of Professor Hoang Tuy in the country's mathematics in general and the specialized mathematics system in particular. Through that, we will continue to build the affection of the younger generation for him. Like our 8X generation of mathematicians, for example, although not many people have met him directly, but mainly read and listen, everyone respects and is grateful to him for what he has done for Vietnamese mathematics.”
It is known that the Vietnamese team participating in the international math competition includes 6 students: Vuong Tung Duong, Vinh Phuc High School for the Gifted; Nguyen Kha Nhat Long, High School for the Gifted, University of Natural Sciences, Vietnam National University, Hanoi; Nguyen Thuan Hung, Tran Phu High School for the Gifted, Hai Phong; Nguyen Nguyen, High School for the Gifted, University of Natural Sciences, Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City; Vu Duc Vinh, Phan Boi Chau High School for the Gifted, Nghe An; Phan Minh Duc, Hanoi - Amsterdam High School for the Gifted, Hanoi.
