With the theme “Shaping the Future: Promoting Economic Transformation Towards Equitable, Inclusive and Sustainable Development,” the 16th Ministerial Meeting of the United Nations Agencies for Trade and Development (UNTACD16) opened on October 20.

This is seen as a crucial opportunity to help reshape global trade, especially in the context of increasing instability.

In the opening session, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh delivered a video address, congratulating the conference and sharing three messages with attendees.

Firstly, the Prime Minister emphasized that the world is living in a turning point in history, requiring people to change their mindset, their way of thinking and doing things, to think deeply and act on a larger scale.

The Prime Minister emphasized the need to place people at the center, as the subject, resource, driving force, and goal of development. Therefore, all policies must be geared towards human development.

In the current context, the Prime Minister affirmed that science and technology, innovation, and digital transformation should be the foundation; and environmental protection and social security should be the main driving forces to focus on rapid but sustainable development.

Secondly, now more than ever, in the current context, the Prime Minister believes it is necessary to call for international solidarity, uphold multilateralism, and cooperate to promote global development. All current issues concern the entire population, comprehensively and globally. Therefore, the world must ensure a fair, transparent, rules-based world order, considering it a prerequisite for peace, stability, cooperation, development, and shared prosperity for all people.

The Prime Minister emphasized the need to reform and strengthen confidence in multilateralism, enhance international cooperation, and work together to promote strong and effective reforms of the multilateral trade and financial system towards openness, fairness, inclusiveness, and serving the interests of all nations.

Finally, the Prime Minister affirmed that Vietnam pursues an independent, self-reliant, multilateral, and diversified foreign policy, is a good friend and reliable partner with all countries in the world, and is a responsible member of the international community. The Prime Minister expressed Vietnam's unwavering support for the central role of the United Nations in ensuring a peaceful environment, promoting cooperation, and addressing global and people-to-people issues, including trade, investment, and inclusive and sustainable development.

The event is scheduled to take place from now until October 23rd. Organized by Switzerland and UNCTAD, the conference brings together heads of state and government, trade and economic ministers, Nobel laureates, leaders of international organizations, and prominent experts to engage in a high-level dialogue on global trends and policy approaches in trade, investment, development, and the digital economy.

Speaking at a press conference before the meeting, Rebeca Grynspan, Secretary-General of UNCTAD, said that the UN Secretary-General would also attend the conference, and emphasized the importance of UNCTAD.

According to her, this is the largest trade conference of the United Nations in the past four years, and UNCTAD16 is taking place at a crucial time for global trade and multilateralism as the world is witnessing a groundbreaking shift.

According to Rebeca Grynspan, the decisions made at UNCTAD16 will impact the future of trade, global development policy, and subsequent debates.

During the conference, delegates will discuss the most important challenges facing the global economy and the current political and economic landscape.
