With the theme “Shaping the Future: Accelerating Economic Transformation towards Equitable, Inclusive and Sustainable Development,” the 16th United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNTACD16) opened on October 20.
This is considered an important opportunity to help reshape global trade, especially in the context of increasing instability.
During the opening session, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh delivered a speech via video recording, congratulating the conference and sharing three messages to the conference.
Firstly, the Prime Minister emphasized that the world is living in a turning point in history, requiring people to change their thinking, their way of thinking, their way of doing things, to think deeply and do bigger things.
The Prime Minister believes that it is necessary to put people at the center, as the subject, as the resource, as the driving force, and as the goal of development. Therefore, all policies must aim at human development.
In the current context, the Prime Minister affirmed that it is necessary to take science and technology, innovation and digital transformation as the foundation; to take environmental protection and social security as the main driving force to focus on rapid but sustainable development.
Second, more than ever, in the current context, the Prime Minister believes that it is necessary to call for international solidarity, promote multilateralism and work together to promote global development. All current issues are related to the entire people, comprehensively and globally. Therefore, the world must ensure a fair, transparent and rules-based world order, considering it a prerequisite for peace, stability, cooperation, development and common prosperity for all people.
The Prime Minister stressed the need to reform and strengthen trust in multilateralism, enhance international cooperation, and join hands to promote strong and effective reform of the multilateral trade and financial system towards openness, fairness, and inclusiveness, meeting the interests of all countries.
Finally, the Prime Minister affirmed that Vietnam pursues an independent, self-reliant, multilateral and diversified foreign policy, is a good friend and reliable partner with all countries in the world, and is a responsible member of the international community. The Prime Minister expressed that Vietnam firmly supports the central role of the United Nations in ensuring a peaceful environment, promoting cooperation, and resolving global and people-related issues, including trade, investment and inclusive and sustainable development.
The event, scheduled to run from now until October 23, will be organized by Switzerland and UNCTAD and will bring together heads of state and government, trade and economic ministers, Nobel laureates, heads of international organizations and renowned experts to engage in a high-level dialogue on global trends and policy approaches in trade, investment, development and the digital economy.
Speaking at a press conference before the conference, Ms. Rebeca Grynspan - Secretary-General of UNCTAD, said that the United Nations Secretary-General will also attend the conference, while emphasizing the importance of UNCTAD.
According to her, this is the largest trade conference of the United Nations in the past four years and UNCTAD16 takes place at an important time for global trade as well as multilateralism when the world is witnessing a groundbreaking shift.
According to Ms. Rebeca Grynspan, decisions made at UNCTAD16 will impact the future of trade, global development policy and future debates.
During the conference, delegates will discuss the most important challenges facing the global economy and the current political and economic context./.
