On the morning of December 11th in Hanoi , the Swedish Embassy in Vietnam and the Swedish Trade Office in Vietnam (Business Sweden) organized the Vietnam-Sweden Healthcare Innovation Workshop.

The event is part of the Health Innovation Initiative, launched in 2024, aimed at strengthening Vietnam's capacity in chronic disease management, healthcare digitalization, and the provision of high-quality care services.

Sweden partners with Vietnam's healthcare system.

Following the celebration of 56 years of diplomatic relations in 2025, Vietnam and Sweden are preparing to enter 2026, marking 50 years of cooperation in the healthcare sector.

Speaking to Tuoi Tre Online on the sidelines of the conference, Swedish Ambassador to Vietnam Johan Ndisi recalled that medical cooperation between the two countries originated from a difficult period in history.

Sweden helped rebuild Bach Mai Hospital after the 1972 bombing and supported the construction of the Vietnam-Sweden Uong Bi Hospital. Today, these hospitals not only continue to provide modern medical services to millions of people but also stand as enduring symbols of Vietnam-Sweden friendship.

Over the past half-century, according to Ambassador Ndisi, health cooperation between the two sides has yielded many notable results thanks to the exchange of experts and students, research collaboration, and training. The two countries are now focusing their cooperation on innovation, digital transformation in healthcare, and public health.

As a strategic partner in science, technology, and innovation, Ambassador Ndisi affirmed that Sweden can share its experience with Vietnam in applying digital technology to provide healthcare services in remote areas, shifting the focus from treatment to prevention.

"Both Vietnam and Sweden have sprawling landscapes, requiring equitable healthcare services for both urban and rural areas. The use of digital healthcare tools can become crucial," he explained.

Swedish solutions include electronic health records that allow easy access for both patients and doctors, speeding up the diagnostic process, and telemedicine, which facilitates easy video conferencing between patients and doctors. The Swedish healthcare model focuses on early detection, a robust immunization program, promoting healthy lifestyles, and disease prevention.

Swedish companies with a presence in Vietnam, such as AstraZeneca and Ericsson, can play a crucial role in building a reliable and digital healthcare platform. At the same time, with a population of 100 million, Vietnam is an important partner for Sweden to collaborate on developing suitable healthcare solutions with global potential.

Experience has helped Vietnam shift from treatment to prevention.

Speakers and delegates at the conference discussed the potential for future cooperation between the two countries in the field of healthcare, Sweden's experience in the prevention and care of non-communicable diseases, and digital healthcare solutions.

At the event, Ms. Pham Thi Minh Chau, Deputy Director of the International Cooperation Department (Ministry of Health), affirmed that Sweden's partnership over the past decades has helped improve healthcare services and created a foundation for Vietnam to make transformations in the new phase.

"The workshop is taking place in the context of Vietnam implementing Resolution No. 72 of the Politburo on a number of breakthrough solutions to strengthen the protection, care, and improvement of people's health. This resolution sets out many strategic directions, including prevention over cure, shifting from passive treatment to proactive prevention, managing the health of the entire population, and strengthening the prevention and early detection of non-communicable diseases...", she stated.

According to her, Vietnam needs a comprehensive approach in which the prevention and control of non-communicable diseases, strengthening primary care, and developing digital solutions will play a key role.

She hopes that the workshop will provide an opportunity to learn from Sweden's experience in proactive prevention, continuous management of non-communicable diseases, data infrastructure development, and the implementation of digital technology in healthcare.
