Daihatsu, a subsidiary of Toyota, recently admitted to cheating on side-impact crash tests. This scandal affects a total of 88,123 vehicles manufactured by Daihatsu, including the new generation Toyota Vios, Toyota Wigo, and Perodua Axia.
Of the 88,123 vehicles mentioned above, a total of 76,289 new-generation Toyota Vios vehicles were manufactured in Thailand and Malaysia starting in August 2022. These vehicles were then distributed to markets such as Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Laos, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, and Mexico. In Thailand alone, 36,890 units of the 2023 Toyota Vios (known as Yaris Ativ) were sold between August 2022 and March 2023.
Toyota Thailand has decided to stop selling the 2023 Toyota Vios (called Yaris Ativ) due to potentially inaccurate safety test results.
Following the scandal, Toyota Thailand decided to temporarily suspend sales of the new generation Toyota Vios in the market from April 29, 2023. Toyota Thailand stated that the 2023 Vios will resume sales after retesting for safety. Meanwhile, Toyota Malaysia said it will continue selling the new generation Vios in the market because the car has no safety or quality issues.
This move is also quite puzzling between Toyota Malaysia and Toyota Thailand, as these are the two countries that produce the majority of Vios models. Toyota Malaysia stated that the 2023 Vios still meets the UN-R95 safety standard and that the vehicle has no safety or quality issues.
Besides the 2023 Toyota Vios, the new generation Toyota Agya, also known as Wigo in Vietnam, and the Perodua Axia in Malaysia, were affected from February 2023 onwards, with a total of 11,834 units affected. There is also a new model under development, but Daihatsu has not revealed its name.
According to Daihatsu, they will conduct new crash tests in the presence of authorities and confirm the safety of the vehicles before continuing to ship them from the factory. Toyota said it has not received any information about accidents or injuries related to Daihatsu's alleged side-impact crash test fraud.
This scandal does not affect the 2023 Toyota Vios that will soon be sold in Vietnam. This is because the cars in Vietnam are not the new generation Toyota Vios that uses the Daihatsu chassis.
