Currently, Ho Chi Minh City still has many houses on and along rivers and canals, concentrated in basins under great drainage pressure, leading to obstruction of water flow, loss of safety in fire prevention, fire fighting, rescue, and landslides, environmental pollution, loss of urban beauty and quality of life of people; creating great pressure on the city's drainage system.

Recently, the Resolution of the 1st Congress of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee, term 2025 - 2030, set a goal of striving to complete the relocation of 50% of houses on and along canals and ditches in the city (about 20,000 houses) by the end of 2030.

According to information, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has approved the Urban Renovating Project for residential areas on and along rivers, canals and ditches in the period 2025 - 2030. At the same time, the City also approved the Project to renovate residential areas on and along canals and ditches in District 8 (old), now belonging to three wards: Chanh Hung, Binh Dong and Phu Dinh, with the goal of dredging and clearing canals, preventing landslides, building a road system, canal embankments, urban renovating, improving and cleaning the urban environment, treating water and air pollution, investing in building green parks and public spaces. The total capital of the two projects is 105,000 billion VND.

According to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, urban beautification, relocation and resettlement of houses on and along rivers, canals and ditches require huge resources, especially compensation, support and resettlement costs, which account for the majority, and the city's ability to balance the budget in the short term remains very difficult.
