"Kiss Lighting - Ghost Cupid" (pictured), scheduled for release in December 2024, is the first South Korean television drama produced by AI. According to the production company, Kings Creative, AI was used for scriptwriting and visuals. Specifically, the director wrote preliminary outlines of the content, then used ChatGPT to refine the script based on ideas from discussions to finalize it. AI tools such as HeyGen, ElevenLabs, and Midjourney were used for visuals.
Jung In Su, a producer at Kings Creative, believes that AI significantly simplifies processes that previously took a lot of time and effort. Previously, changing an actor's face on screen took days to create, but with AI, it can be done quickly with many different options. Furthermore, using AI only costs about 100,000 won for countless illustrations, while creating a human-made illustration costs around 200,000-300,000 won. This is also why many film producers in South Korea are increasingly using AI.
Specifically, MBC C&I launched a program to select 12 new creators to develop films using AI and augmented reality (XR) technology. Among these, 9 works were produced experimentally using AI. Yang Eek Jun, a producer at Mateo AI Studio, believes that with AI, filmmaking can be done at home and requires less effort and time. This allows young filmmakers and independent filmmakers to create their own products without worrying about funding. For example, director Kwon Han-seul's film "One More Pumpkin" almost entirely uses AI to create all the scenery, sounds, and the main characters – an elderly couple. The film was made in 5 days and was very well received by audiences. "One More Pumpkin" won the Grand Prize and the Audience Award at the 2024 Dubai AI Film Festival.
Experts also believe that one of the biggest advantages of using AI in film production is the significant reduction in time and cost, making it possible for anyone to become a filmmaker. Producer Jung In Su said that many screenwriters and directors he knows often use ChatGPT to support their scriptwriting and filmmaking processes. Meanwhile, producer Yang Eek Jun believes that using AI in film production is necessary in today's technological competition, but to tell a compelling story that attracts viewers, one cannot rely solely on AI. In reality, AI-generated content often doesn't hold viewers for very long, so human creativity is still needed to create storylines that can keep viewers watching for dozens of minutes. Therefore, AI is a good tool to support the filmmaking process if used appropriately.
