Speaking to Tuoi Tre Online on the morning of November 29th, Mr. Huynh Bong, head of the student affairs department at the University of Education (Da Nang University), said that after the touching story of Pham Nguyen Thanh Lam, a blind freshman in the psychology and education department who has been picked up, dropped off, and supported by her 87-year-old grandmother from her hometown since she started university, the school's management board held a meeting and agreed to invite the two of them to live in the dormitory free of charge.
"The Youth Union and the Student Association of the school also visited the boarding house where Lam and her grandmother are staying to offer their support and gifts. From now on, scholarships will also be given priority by the school."
"The school has arranged a dorm room for them on campus. According to regulations, cooking is not allowed, but Lam and her grandmother are in a very special situation, so they will be allowed to cook in a separate kitchen area," Mr. Bong said.
To spread the story of Lam's perseverance in studying and the sacrifice of her 87-year-old grandmother, Huynh Thi Hong, Mr. Bong said that at the meeting on the afternoon of November 29th, Da Nang University of Education also invited Ms. Le Thi Ngoc Lan - the homeroom teacher - to share the story.
Ms. Lan was moved and said she didn't think the plight of her students would spread and receive so much attention as it has now.

A benefactor contacted us to provide monthly support for Lam for her four years of study. Even more touching, a classmate of Lam's asked the school for permission to live with her blind friend in the dormitory, taking care of her in place of Lam's grandmother until graduation.
"We have discussed with the family about letting the grandmother and granddaughter stay in the dormitory. If they are allowed to stay, commuting and studying will be very convenient, as it will be free of charge and right within the school grounds."
"Lam's grandmother is old and frail now, so she needs to go back to her hometown to rest. If the family agrees, Lam's classmate will come and stay with her so that her grandmother can feel at ease returning home," Ms. Lan said.
As reported by Tuoi Tre Online , out of concern for her blind granddaughter who couldn't take care of herself after being accepted into university, Mrs. Huynh Thi Hong (87 years old, residing in Tien Phuoc, Quang Nam ) left her hometown to go to the city to pick up, drop off, and take care of Pham Nguyen Thanh Lam - a first-year psychology and education student.
Since the beginning of the school year, the image of the elderly woman with white hair, holding an old hat and hobbling in front of the gate of Da Nang University of Education to pick up and drop off her granddaughter, has deeply moved many people.
According to her family, Pham Nguyen Thanh Lam suffered from glaucoma, which damaged the optic nerve and caused her to become completely blind in the 8th grade.
