Ho Chi Minh City – Using a fake PhD in Computer Science , a person successfully became a lecturer and then head of department at the Vietnam College of Industry and Trade.
On November 25th, a leader from the Vietnam College of Industry and Trade stated that in October, the school discovered that the Head of the Information Technology Department was using a fake diploma. This is the first time such an incident has occurred at the school.
This person, born in 1981, applied for a lecturer position and was offered a probationary position in early September. Their application included a master's and a doctoral degree in Computer Science, both awarded by the University of Science, Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City. The applicant did not provide their bachelor's degree, claiming it was lost and they were in the process of obtaining a replacement.
Recognizing the candidate's teaching abilities and relevant doctoral degree, the university appointed him as Head of the Information Technology Department at the end of September, replacing the previous head who retired.
Subsequently, the Vietnam College of Industry and Trade received several complaints questioning the qualifications of the new head of department. The school sent his information, master's and doctoral degrees, to the University of Natural Sciences for verification. In their response, the University of Natural Sciences stated that the information on the degrees did not match their data.
"When he applied for the job, he submitted a notarized diploma, so the school didn't suspect anything and didn't think anyone would use a fake diploma to apply for a teaching position. This person even sent pictures of himself teaching at several universities and colleges in Ho Chi Minh City," said a leader of the Vietnam College of Industry and Trade.

According to the leaders of the Vietnam College of Industry and Trade, after the verification results were available, this man still insisted that he had studied and obtained a genuine degree. However, before the school could take further steps, in early November, he submitted his resignation and cut off all contact.
The school stated that his teaching time was short, only covering a few classes, so it had not affected student training.

The leader of another university in Binh Thanh district also confirmed that the person using the fake diploma at Vietnam College of Industry and Trade had lectured in several subjects at the school's Information Technology department in 2016 and 2017.
He said that at the time, this person was using a master's degree, and cross-checking diplomas between universities was not yet common, so the school could not detect whether it was genuine or fake.
