Two new representatives have entered the ranking of universities for sustainable development.
On December 10th, the QS organization in the UK announced the ranking of the world's most sustainable universities for 2025. Vietnam has 10 universities ranked, including two new additions: Hue University and Da Nang University, both in the 1,501+ group. Three universities that previously ranked higher improved their positions: Vietnam National University, Hanoi (from 781-790 to 325), Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics (from 841-860 to 653), and Hanoi University of Science and Technology (from 901-920 to 702).
Meanwhile, Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City, Duy Tan University, and Ton Duc Thang University, Can Tho University, and Nguyen Tat Thanh University all dropped in ranking. Overall, Vietnam has 6 representatives in the top 1,000 most sustainable universities in the world this year, most of them public universities, and 5 out of 6 of them are universities, with only Ton Duc Thang University being a university. Notably, 2 out of 10 are regional universities (Hue, Da Nang), reflecting a more diverse picture of higher education.
Of the 10 Vietnamese universities ranked, only 5 were scored based on QS criteria, ranging from 47.1 (Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City) to 70.5 (Vietnam National University Hanoi) on a 100-point scale.
Specifically, in the environmental impact criteria group, Vietnamese universities achieved the best scores in the environmental research criterion (ranging from 55.4-87.4), while no university exceeded 70 points in the environmental education and sustainable environmental development criteria (ranging from 18.5-66.4 and 13.6-65.4 respectively). In the governance criteria group, universities were rated from 28.7-88.1 points.
In the final group of criteria, social impact, schools achieved consistent scores in the knowledge sharing criterion, ranging from 71.5 to 88.1 points. Other criteria such as equality, employment and opportunities, health and well-being were rated by QS from 44.2-81, 40.1-74.4, and 47.6-80.5, respectively. However, in the educational impact criterion, schools scored relatively low, ranging from 17.6 to 57.3 points.
According to QS, Da Nang University, Hue University, Duy Tan University, Nguyen Tat Thanh University, and Ton Duc Thang University have 1% international students. For other universities, 100% of students are local. QS also stated that there is currently no information available regarding tuition fees for international students, nor are there any scholarships available for foreign students.

What is the ranking method?
According to QS, the world's most sustainable universities are ranked based on three main criteria groups with nine sub-criteria. Within each sub-criterion, QS further divides the evaluation into numerous aspects, totaling 53 aspects. The weighting of these aspects is mostly 1%, but two aspects reach 9% (the impact of research on sustainable development goals) and 10% (academic reputation in the field of earth and environmental sciences).
"The world's most sustainable universities ranking looks for real-world evidence, from alumni contributions in science and technology to address climate issues, to the impact of the university's scientific research on the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The ranking also gives students a unique insight into which universities are truly committed to a more sustainable future," QS wrote in a press release.
In 2025, QS ranked 1,743 higher education institutions from 107 countries and territories worldwide. Leading the ranking of the world's most sustainable universities this year is the University of Toronto (Canada), the only institution to achieve a perfect score of 100. Following closely behind are ETH Zurich (Switzerland) in second place, Lund University (Sweden) and the University of California, Berkeley (USA) tied for third, while UCL (UK) ranked fifth.
QS is one of the world's most prestigious, experienced, and influential university ranking organizations, alongside THE (UK) and Shanghai Ranking Consultancy (China). QS has been ranking universities since 2004, alongside THE, a year after the world first had a global university ranking published by Shanghai Jiao Tong University (later Shanghai Ranking Consultancy).
